The Soccer Teams Take to the Field

Learn about the team's performance last season and what to expect from this year

Last year, the boys and girls Junior Varsity and Varsity teams had an overall amazing season with outstanding performance by all of the players. And this year, they're sure to repeat and improve their star performances.

Girls Varsity last year had a phenomenal season creating bonds and becoming stronger as a team. With some struggles, they managed to become stronger and progress together.

“Last season was definitely a challenge. Defensively, I think we did very well. The year before we won Districts, so we tried to get there again but fell short. Compared to other teams, I think ours was one of the strongest in the league,” said Ashley Burke, 12.

As many of the seniors graduated, the majority of last year’s team was made up of seniors which creates a much younger team with great potential.

“I think this season is definitely gonna be a lot more of a challenge. We lost 12 seniors, which was basically our entire starting line up,” said Burke. “I think it’s gonna be difficult to fill those roles, but I have faith in the team.”

With many of the seniors graduating, there is plenty of room for growth and potential from younger players to fill in their places.

“I’m looking forward to this year because I made the varsity team my freshman year and I think it will be super exciting playing at a higher level, making new friends on the team, learning from them, and how to get better as an individual,” said Elizabeth Corrigan, 9.

As a team, they are looking forward to achieving their goals and becoming better players.

“Our main goal for this year is to win districts and win as much as possible to maybe improve from last year,” said Ana Garcia, 11

With the challenges of COVID having arised, it is up in the air as to what will happen to the soccer season and if there will be any major changes affecting how many games they are able to play. With their first game being already postponed due to a COVID-positive player on the opposing team, everything is due to change throughout the season.

“With the [COVID] virus affecting the possibility of even having a season, I would just like to have a season,” said Coach Craig Calhoun.

Among all the COVID-19 challenges, many of the seniors are wishing to have a good last season to look back on for their last year of high school.

“I am looking forward to the ability to play, I was worried because of COVID-19 our season might get cancelled. So just the chance to have a season and play with friends is going to be great,” said Zach Medeiros, 12.

Boys Varsity had an amazing season last year along with the girls. But similarly to the Girls Varsity, many players have graduated, causing the team to gain a lot of new players and new potential.

“This season is definitely a constructive year, coming off for 18 graduated seniors in two years. We may not get the success we are after, but we will for sure lay down the right foundations,” said Christian Guirgis, 11.

Their team last season had a plentiful amount of seniors filling in the roles, but it is time for younger players to step in and fulfil their places growing as an individual and team along the way.

"We’ll see how they come together and where leaders step up to lead the team. Young but good, we’ll see how far they can go,” said Calhoun.

With younger players arising, there is an abundance of room for growth and goals to achieve as a team and individual players itself.

“I would like to be able to make it back to back District Finals appearances, hopefully a finals win this year. However it’s going to be tough with how many players we lost going into this season," said Medeiros.

Overall, the team is pretty confident to allow room for new growth and bond together while they face certain challenges they come across.

“I personally feel like we will be able to have a successful season and I am confident in our ability as a team," said Medeiros.
