The artist's blending of hyperpop, hard rock, and metal music makes for a unique- and surprisingly effective- sound
Hyperpop artist ‘Poppy’ decided to switch up her style for their fourth studio album, Flux, released on September 24. Her previous releases could be classified as hyperpop, a more exaggerated and bombastic form of pop music. However, for Flux, Poppy had decided to make a drastic and never before seen blending of genres; hyperpop, hard rock, and metal.
On July 30, a music video for Flux, one of the songs off of the album, was released, which was a psychedelic walk through a pink and pastel landscape. In a surprising twist, the sounds of hard rock and heavy metal blend together well with Poppy’s vocals and lyrics. Her lyrics tell a story of gaining independence, and doing whatever you want to do with your life. The repetition of the lines, “You can't oppose it/ That's just how it goes, yeah,” serves as a call to action to everybody out there that is doubting and having second thoughts on what they want to be doing.
A second music video was released on August 25, this time for the song So Mean. The sounds of this song are all heavy metal, which works even better than it did in the previous song. The video takes place in a small, cramped house, with Poppy’s lyrics telling a story about feeling smothered and fed up with her current situation. One of the most memorable and striking parts of the music video comes towards the end of the song, when Poppy says the line “How did I get here?” in an almost robotic and artificial tone, which is then followed up by another Poppy screaming at the other, before the song begins again.
Whether or not you’re a fan of Poppy, heavy metal, rock, or hyperpop, this album is shaping up to be very consistent and groundbreaking in its ideas and themes. Hopefully Poppy will continue with this niche genre of music, as it appears that she has already discovered and mastered a perfect way to blend such varied genres.
