Released in November of 2020, the documentary In Wonder showcases the singer's feelings and relationships
Shawn Mendes' new documentary bares a strikingly vulnerable view of the singer's inner life. His Netflix documentary In Wonder premiered on November 23, 2020. This release has caught the attention of many and garnered a tremendous amount of positive feedback.
In Wonder is a very up-close and personal view on Mendes' life. It reveals information about his family and romantic relationships, his feelings, and his experiences during his recent world tour.
In the beginning of the documentary, Mendes discusses his childhood and teenage years. He talks about how in class one day, he told his vocal teacher, Ms. Parker, that he wanted to be a singer. She didn't have any hesitation to support his dream. All of his family and friends believed in him and encouraged him to go for it. They all could see his potential, and though he admits that he wasn’t that great in the beginning, the more he practiced the better he became.
Mendes makes it clear that he loves what he does. At one point in the documentary, Mendes was asked what he would be doing if not for his stardom.
“I feel puzzled by that question because I feel like this is what I was gonna do,” said Mendes.
He believes that what he does is what he was meant to do. He believes that he was meant to write songs, and sing in front of crowds, and make music that reaches millions of people.
In a Q&A, a fan asked how she could be a songwriter like him. Mendes says he immediately thought back to when he was asking himself the same question. When Mendes originally began writing songs, he would stay in his room for hours practicing and trying to get better at playing his guitar, singing, and writing. Mendes' response to his fan was simple.
“Stop sitting here thinking about it," Mendes said. "You are a songwriter, now go write songs.”
Mendes' long-time aspirations to become a performer have been shared with fans before. But what many fans were really interested in was learning more about Mendes' very public relationship with fellow performer Camilla Cabello.
Cabello is a former member of the band “Fifth Harmony,” and in July 2014, Cabello and Mendes opened together at an Austin Mahone show. Cabello was the only person to talk to him at that show, making her stand out to him. Camilla Cabello and Mendes have been in a relationship since July 4, 2019.
In the documentary, Mendes reveals an anecdote that further demonstrates his devotion to Cabello. According to Mendes, he was once in the car with Cabello when one of his songs came on the radio. He mentioned that the song was about Cabello, and she was shocked. He went on to say, to the surprise of many of his fans, that every song he has ever written has been about Cabello. He also said, notably, that no song would come close to expressing how he feels about Cabello. Following saying he doesn’t think their relationship is meant to be captured. It’s meant to be for the both of them, and no one else.
In a telling episode from the documentary, Mendes expresses his love and appreciation for his millions of devoted fans. According to Mendes, toward the end of the tour, he woke up feeling sick. Doctors advised him that if he performed at the two shows that were originally scheduled for the next day, he would end up damaging his voice severely. So only 30 minutes before the first show, Mendes and his team made the tough decision to cancel the concert entirely. Mendes revealed the news to his fans, many of whom were waiting in line to see him, through a post on his Instagram story. Although he feared that his fans would be angry, they were very understanding, appreciating that he was making the best choice for his health.
After getting back to his hotel room very upset, Mendes heard chanting outside. He opened up his window and saw 2,000 fans chanting and waving up at his window. They may have been saddened by the cancellation, but they wanted to demonstrate their continued support. Mendes said that he felt relieved and overjoyed, appreciative of the public expression of support. By including this anecdote in the documentary, Mendes expressed his gratitude for his fans' understanding and support.
The documentary In Wonder revealed a new perspective on Mendes' life, putting his feelings and personal relationships in the spotlight. Shawn Mendes has had many struggles throughout his career, but for him, it’s all worth it. According to Mendes, the hardships he experienced during the tour taught him to be more positive and optimistic. His loyal fanbase continues to remain devoted to his every tour, interview, and album, and Mendes' popularity doesn't look as though it will be waning any time soon.
