Centered around a breakup, this new single captures both the ferocity of King's anger and the peacefulness of her recovery
The 31 year old alternative rock musician Elle King tells a story through her new song, Another You. The story is about the heartbreak she experienced during a relationship in which her partner made some bad decisions, ultimately ending the relationship. The partner then returned to King, telling her that he wanted to be with her again, despite her already being a part of a new relationship. The song really conveys the lyrics through a sort of flip-flop between a faster paced chorus and slower verse. This style emphasizes the song's themes of slow recovery and then "taking off" to overcome obstacles. The line “It only took a week or two/It wasn’t hard to fill your shoes,” seems to indicate that after the couple parted ways, it hadn’t taken Elle King long to find another relationship. Fans have speculated that this new partner is the same guy she got engaged to after a year of dating back in October: Dan Tooker, a tattoo artist. King had given her previous boyfriend several chances to redeem himself and to salvage the relationship as said in the line: “Cause all your second chances, you just took advantage.” After a while, she seemed to grow tired of it. She sings, “Now I got it better but, man, it did my head in,” possibly meaning that while she's in a new, better relationship, her past still hurts her.
