WHY ETERNALS DIDN'T WORK

While Marvel is known for its blockbuster hits, Eternals missed the mark

Marvel has released some great movies over the years- Iron Man, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi. That's why when a new Marvel release is imminent, there's bound to be some hype. But in the case of the new Marvel release Eternals, the movie failed to live up to expectations. The plot gets boring at times, the movie is long and gets old after a while, and some parts of the story don't make sense and don’t tie in well to the overarching plot of the MCU.

The Eternals movie is about a group of heroes who came to Earth by orders of "the Celestials." The Celestials are the creators of the universe, and they ordered the Eternals to come to earth to stop "the Deviants," which are monsters that are killing humans. After forming a connection to the people of Earth, the Eternals later discover that the core of the Earth is actually a celestial seed. Celestial seeds signify the birth of a new Celestial. The planet hosting a celestial seed will be destroyed in order to give birth to the new celestial. A planet's population is somehow tied to the timing of the celestial birth, so the Eternals work together in order to stop the birth of the new celestial and to save everyone on Earth. Sound confusing? Yeah, it is.

This movie is way too long and gets boring after a while. With a runtime of 2 hours and 37 minutes, there is a lot of unnecessary repetition in this movie. For example, the characters recap what they’ve already said before and they talk about their plan to stop the Deviants and the Celestials over and over again. They also take forever to talk to one of the Eternals as to why he should join them in stopping the Celestials, and that scene gets very boring and uninteresting.

Some parts don’t tie in to the story well and don’t make sense. In The Eternals, there are a lot of things that are unexplained. One of the many examples of these plot holes comes from the fact that the movie does not explain why a planet needs to host a Celestial seed. It also seems weird as to why the human population would have anything to do with the Celestial seed breaking. The beginning of the movie mainly focuses on how Eternals destroyed all of the Deviants. But then, somehow, they are magically alive again with no explanation and are trying to attack them. This muddles the plot and confuses the viewer.

In conclusion, this movie was not the best, and it could definitely have been better. The plot was bad, it’s long and boring sometimes, and some parts don’t make that much sense. Hopefully the next Marvel movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, will be able to make up for this lackluster addition to the MCU.
