What has been happening?
Delayed releases tend to happen in the video game industry, and perhaps one of the latest victim of this is Kerbal Space Program 2, a physics based space exploration game, a sequel to the original Kerbal Space Program. The original Kerbal Space Program earned praise for its realistic features of space travel, a fun solar system to explore, craft building, and it’s high modability. Kerbal Space Program 2 promised improvements on pre-existing features, like improved UI, graphics, and tutorials. Interstellar travel, featuring new planets to explore, like a Saturn look-a-like named Glumo, a gravity heavy super-Earth named Ovin, and a binary planet system rotating around each other of the names Rask and Rusk. Stellar colonies are also promised, and possibly most ambitiously of all, multiplayer. All of these features have gotten old fans of Kerbal Space Program excited, and attracted newer players as well.
Announced in 2019, Kerbal Space Program 2 had an original release date of sometime in 2020, but has since been delayed. Twice, first to 2021, then recently to 2022. Why is that? What is happening behind the scenes?
Delays in a video games development can occur for various reasons. The two major categories are issues popping up during development, pushing back the planned release date, and mismanagement. Some games just need more time in the oven to work out issues, while others aren’t really progressing in development for whatever reason - Clashing ideas, unclear direction, and similar. Which one of these does KSP2 fall into? Although never stated by the developers of the game, it can be speculated that the game just needs more time in development due to its ambitious ideas. Video’s frequent;y come from the developers that showcase new features, recently of the atmospheric system, but also of colonies and various planets.
To conclude, the delays of KSP2 likely are a result of it’s ambitious scope, needing further development time, instead of mismanagement or development hell. Although, it is only speculation, and it will be seen which is true when the current release date of KSP2 draws closer. Will it be delayed once more? Or will the game properly come out, or could it be canceled altogether?
