The Earthsea series is a story set in the fictional archipelago of Earthsea and is centered on a young mage named Ged, who is born in a village on the island of Gont. He displays great power while still a boy and joins a school of wizardry, where his prickly nature drives him into conflict with a fellow student. The first installment of this fantasy story was released in 1968, and over the years it has accumulated a base of devoted readers. The series has been commended by critics and readers alike. If you are interested in the genres fantasy and adventure, these books are made for you.
Six of Crows is the story of Kaz Brekker and his crew, attempting to pull off an impossible heist. There is Kaz, known as 'Dirtyhands' in the Barrel (the slums of Ketterdam), who is part of The Dregs. The Dregs is a gang, and (as the name suggests) consists of everyone scraped from the floor of the Barrel. The author of this book, Leigh Bardugo has experience creating worlds full of adventure and heroics. This was one of her first books to achieve such a high level of popularity, but she isn't new to the fantasy genre. She's been writing fantasy since the early 2010's, with notable titles such as The Witch of Duva to her name. But Six of Crows stands out among her other works. This book is filled with a bunch of great fantasy and adventure and is a great read if you are into that.
The Fault In Our Stars is a book about a teenage girl who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and attends a cancer support group. Hazel is 16 and is reluctant to go to the support group. Hazel meets a young boy named Augustus Waters. Through him, she is exposed to new perspectives and ideas on her sickness that she had never previously considered. The Fault in Our Stars is a heart-wrenching story that is sure to move even the most stoic readers to tears. This is arguably the most well-known novel to come from prolific author John Green, and captures his unique style of witty yet moving writing. The novel is filled with romance and an exploration of the weighty themes of death and dying through a teenage lens.
The Maze Runner series is one of the most famous pieces of YA fiction to have been published in the last few years. In this exciting mystery/dystopia, a teen wakes up in a clearing in the center of a gigantic maze with no memory of his past. The boy, Thomas, finds himself a resident in a community of boys who have built a village in the maze and who send two of its strongest and fittest runners into the maze every morning to find a way out. Sounds fascinating? That's only the first few pages. Like The Earthsea series and the Six of Crows, The Maze Runner is filled with a bunch of great fantasy and adventure.
A Wrinkle in Time is an amazing sci-fi book. It follows the story of Meg Murry, a high school girl who is transported on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin O'Keefe to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. As she progresses through her adventure, she comes to realize what is most important to her. This family story explores the values of love and connection in a deeply personal way.
Books are a means of transporting yourself to another world. If you want to learn and experience new things, all you have to do is pick up a new book. The worlds within these five novels are each strikingly different, but they all have one thing in common: an engaging, meaningful story.
