Don't throw it away- reuse it!

Here are some handy ways to reuse common waste items- and lower your environmental impact

January 26, 2022

Humans generate more than 3.5 million pounds of trash every single day. This trash can take an enormous environmental toll. But together, we can work together to make a dent in this environmental burden. One way to do this is to avoid throwing away an item if you've only used it once. Here are some ways to reuse items we throw away often (like glass jars, plastic bottles, plastic bags, and soda cans) and make them into useful household items.

First off, if you have any empty glass jars that once held jam, pickles, or preserves, don't just throw them away! You can reuse them. Use glass jars to store food and all sorts of other things, too. You can serve drinks to friends and family in these glass jars, adding a little bit of a decorative twist. Or, add a pump to the top of your jar to create a hand wash dispenser. You could even use the jar to layer ingredients for making strawberry shortcake, attach the recipe, pop a bow on top, and surprise someone with your amazing gift. You can also create a glitter vase, regular vase, or pot for pens, pencils, forks, spoons, or even kitchen knives.

Every day about 1.3 billion plastic bottles are thrown away- that's 22 billion plastic bottles a year. But why throw them away when we can reuse them instead? For example, you can craft a lamp from the caps of the plastic bottles. Just use a little bit of hot glue to attach the caps to a lampshade or even an empty gallon jug. Pop a lightbulb in there and you've got a unique lamp that's sure to be a conversation-starter! If home decor isn't your forte, airplane toys can be made from empty shampoo bottles. Simply attach construction-paper wings and a tail to a shampoo bottle, and you've created a toy that's sure to bring hours of fun to any small children in your life.

Like plastic bottles, you can also reuse plastic bags. One way you can reuse these common waste items is to use them to package valuables, or save paint brushes and rollers for later purposes. You can also protect your plants from cold or insects by covering them with plastic bags. Of course, probably the most common purpose for plastic bags is to line a trash can. The simple action of going without special trash bags and just using plastic bags you already have can greatly reduce your environmental impact.

We drink a lot of soda and throw away a lot of soda cans. So reuse them by making them into a herb garden by carefully cutting the top off of your soda cans, painting them, and then planting herbs in them. Another way to reuse soda cans is to make them into a bird feeder. In order to make a bird feeder, first cut the side, starting from a few centimeters from the bottom, then fill the can with bird food, and decorate and hang it outside from a tree. Also, we can reuse soda cans by using them as garden markers, or DIY vases.

In order to help the environment, we should reuse items that we throw out every day. You can reuse everyday objects like glass jars, plastic bottles, plastic bags, and soda cans- it may not seem impactful at first, but small actions of conservation can add up to a greener world.
