Being a teenager means many of us are on a budget. With homework, extracurriculars, sports, and other activities taking up much of our waking hours, many students do not have the time to get a job. For others, they are simply too young to go out and work a job because many companies hire students that are 16 or older.
Trying to find something fun to do with your friends that everyone is able to afford and have fun with can turn into an unsolvable puzzle. Lucky for you, options do exist. Here are five fun things to do in Brevard that are completely free:
Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge
“You need to get out and get fresh air”- who hasn’t heard that one? For those who have been stuck inside for too long, or simply want to go and do something with their friends, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is the place to be. While this refuge can be quite a drive for some people, it’s worth it. At the refuge, there are plenty of activities that you can take part in to make this a full-day adventure.
You can start with the Visitor Information Center, a place on the refuge where you can ask questions, use the restroom, visit a bookstore, and even go out on a Boardwalk. This center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., so whether you awake with the rising sun or the afternoon lunch, you have plenty of time to go visit. Besides the Visitor Center, there are other experiences that you can have out in the refuge, with one specifically being to take a hike. The Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge has plenty of hiking trails that are good for any skill set of hiker. With seven trails to choose from, everyone can find a trail that they want to go explore. Being out in nature never sounded so appealing!
2. Art and Craft Holiday Bazaar
Are you an artist? This is the spot for you! Seasonally, visit the Art and Craft Holiday Bazaar going on in Cocoa Village. Admission is completely free and there will be live entertainment for you and your friends to go watch. This festival is great for kids and pets as well, so don’t be shy about letting them tag along. Here you will also be able to see hundreds of artists and do so with plenty of safety precautions.
In light of the pandemic, the festival has doubled the amount of space that they are using and will be complying with COVID-19 and city mask policies to make this event be as safe as possible. Keep a look out for this festival all over Riverfront Park and the Cocoa Village streets because you won’t want to miss a thing!
3. Movies in the Park
If you’re sick of being inside, this is the place for you. Seeing a movie in the park is just what you will need to get out of the house, enjoy the nice weather, and have some great entertainment at the best cost around: free. What’s even better is that this is an activity that you can do with the whole family or just a great group of friends. At the Kiwanis Park in Merritt Island, Brevard County Parks and Recreation often shows family-friendly movies.
Make sure that if you go, you also bring something to sit on and bug spray if needed, since this film will be shown completely outdoors. For those still concerned about COVID-19, no need to worry; there will be marked circles on the grass to assist with social distancing and everyone is recommended to wear a face mask if you leave that spot.
The Beach
Sand, surf, and sun; there is no better place for these elements to mix than at the beach. With the weather cooling down and the year-round sunshine, taking a trip to the beach with all of your friends is an adventure to be had.
Going to the beach has plenty of fun opportunities, none of which cost you a dime. Taking a swim in the water, getting a sun tan, and playing games on the beach (like frisbee) are all activities open for you to choose from. Going with your friends will only make this
experience more exciting, and there’s no saying just how many memories you will make when you all get together. A perk of living on the Space Coast is that there are also plenty of beaches to choose from; driving east, you are never too far from another place to pull in and watch the waves.
5. Watch a Rocket Launch
Living on the Space Coast means that we always have one kind of free entertainment: rocket launches. Watching a rocket launch is completely free, and the best part is, you can do it from almost anywhere. Whether you're at the beach, pulled over on the side of the road, or watching from your friend’s driveway, there is always a place to watch the rocket launch with your crew.
