Small actions can make a world of difference.
The “Senior Project” is a milestone that every Edgewood student must pass before they graduate. This project can vary from senior to senior, but many of them have one thing in common: they need you. While a senior may be the one creating the project, there are some that just would not be complete without the help and support of the student body. Whether it’s wearing an ugly sweater or donating school supplies, seniors need your assistance to make their vision a reality, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so.
Beat the Winter Blues Friday Fun Days
You may remember that December 4th was Hat Day, but you might not know that this day of baseball caps and sombreros was the work of senior Lauren Schleffer. For her senior project, Schleffer took to the challenge of creating “Beat the Winter Blues Friday Fun Days,” a series of themed days designed to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
SAD is a form of depression that occurs during the winter months when the weather is colder and there is a decreased amount of sunlight. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the symptoms of this disorder include feeling depressed almost all the time, having a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy doing, having very little energy, having difficulty sleeping, struggling with concentration, and experiencing changes in either your appetite or weight.
To beat out this disorder, Schleffer is holding these spirit days to bring out the fun that comes with the holiday season. Focusing on the positives of this time of year is one way to beat out the blues, and with the difficulties we have all experienced this year, who doesn’t need a reason to find some holiday cheer?
So how can you participate? Well, that’s easy! Friday December 18th is Pajama Day. To support her project, all you have to do is dress up in school-appropriate pajamas. What’s even better is that if you dress up and post a comment responding to that day’s post on the Sources of Strength Instagram page (@edgewoodsos), you can also get a prize!
If you’re an e-learning student, don’t worry- you can participate, too. If you dress up in your ugly sweater or pajamas, all you will need to do is to turn on your camera for your tribe teacher to show them your festive attire. If you thought participating in this project couldn’t get any better, think again, because you also have the chance to earn tribe points! Make sure you get your ugly sweaters and pajamas ready, because it’s time to have fun.
Supply Drive
If dressing up isn’t your thing, another senior project that you can participate in is Isela Villarreal’s drive to benefit the Women’s Center of Brevard.
The Women’s Center is an organization that works to support women and other members of the community suffering from difficult domestic situations and provide them the assistance or the materials that they need. As a way to support this group and their mission, Villarreal has created a supply drive to collect menstrual and hygiene products to try to fill this need for those who may not otherwise have access to it.
In order to assist her with her project, you can donate these items from December 7-14 (tentatively) to the McLarty Park Recreation Center or to collection boxes placed around the school. You can also make a difference without even having to leave your house by purchasing items from the Women's Center Amazon Wishlist.
A little bit of giving can go a long way, and these basic necessities can be the starting point for a successful path to the rest of a person’s life.
Holiday Grams
Edgewood is known for being a big supporter of the elementary schools in our community. Knowing just how much we like to help those that are younger than us, Summer Chapman took a special interest in Saturn Elementary School for her senior project. Chapman learned about Saturn Elementary’s “Starbucks School” program, an incentive-based initiative that rewards students “money” for good behavior and turning in their work on time. Once these students have earned enough money, they are able to exchange them for school supplies that they can use to complete their school work. This program is designed to reward these students for doing the right thing while also giving them the opportunity to get school supplies.
As students turn in their work on the due date and are well behaved in class, they are learning great qualities that will better help them succeed later in life. Wanting to support this fantastic program, Chapman created “Holiday Grams.” Holiday Grams were sold December 9-11 in the cafeteria to Edgewood students in order to raise funds for the Starbucks School program. Each gram came with a santa hat and a packet of hot cocoa mix and was delivered to your chosen recipient in Tribe on December 18th.
The proceeds from selling these grams were all donated to Saturn Elementary in order to benefit their program.
