what is r.a.i.s.e. tutoring?

The Reading Achievement Initiative for Scholastic Excellence (R.A.I.S.E.) (HB 7011) establishes criteria for identifying schools for additional support. One way that Brevard has provided additional support to both R.A.I.S.E. and Non-R.A.I.S.E. Elementary Schools is by providing small-group instruction in phonemic awareness and/or phonics to identified kindergarten through third-graders through this tutoring program. Students in 11th and 12th grade are able to tutor as student employees and be paid, or earn volunteer hours. Tutors are assigned to elementary schools where they work with small groups of kindergarten through third graders using materials available through our core program, Benchmark Advance.

is tutoring for you?

The following requirements are needed in order to be eligible for the tutoring program. If you have any questions about whether or not you qualify, please speak to your Curriculum AP or Mrs. Mallory.

Tutors must be in 11th or 12th grade for the 2025-2026 school year.

Tutors must be in good standing both academically and behaviorally. A tutor can be dismissed from the program should issues arise in either area.

Students can tutor before their school day starts, as a first period elective, or last period elective. Tutors must provide their own transportation.

Tutors who choose the paid option will have to complete the HR application process to be hired. Tutors are BPS student employees who earn $15 per hour. They are paid bi-monthly on the 15th and last day of each month like all other employees. Timesheets are required and are handled by the secretary at the tutoring site. Please see the HR section below to view the required documents to be hired as a student tutor.

Tutors who choose to earn Bright Futures credits will need to bring the necessary paperwork with them each day so the site coordinator at their tutoring site can sign off. Tutors do have the option of switching from volunteer hours to paid if positions are available, but will have to complete the HR process in order to do so.

Astronaut High students (Kiley Redfern, Jackson Nix, Lily Sakuma and Hannah Ferguson) have made a huge impact tutoring first graders at Oak Park Elementary. They have worked hard to build relationships with their students and have even participated in PBIS events on campus.

how do i sign up?

If you are ready to commit to the tutoring program here are the next steps!

Contact your AP of Curriculum and tell them that you want to tutor.
Decide if you are doing before school, first period, or last period (make sure you are registered for the elective course).
Choose the paid or volunteer option.
VOLUNTEER TUTORS: Fill out the tutoring application and turn it into your AP, who will then scan it to Mrs. Mallory and she will complete the memo of recommendation.
PAID TUTORS: Fill out the tutoring application and turn it into your AP who will then scan it to Mrs. Mallory. Then complete the HR steps located below.

Program Deadlines:

First Semester (Fall): Must have tutoring application and/or HR paperwork submitted by March 13th, 2025

Second Semester (Spring): Must have tutoring application and/or HR paperwork submitted by December 5th, 2025

Here you will find the list of required documents for applying through HR to be a paid R.A.I.S.E. tutor. All forms must be filled out in ink.

When filling out the work history:
- Include the last 5 years and put 'current' for today's date with no gaps.
- Example: 2/2020 - Current : Student

Once your Beacon application is completed, please wait for HR to reach out to you to schedule an appointment. You will take the following documents to your onboarding appointment with HR.

Signed Social Security Card
Direct Deposit Form with voided check
Florida Drivers License/State ID

FAQs

Do I get to choose what school I tutor at?

Tutors are placed at elementary schools based on level of support needed. You can request a school, but you are not guaranteed to be placed there.

What happens if I am sick?

You stay home and rest, but please contact your AP and site coordinator so they are not expecting you.

What if I don't want to tutor anymore?

We hope that this isn't the case, but we understand sometimes things do not work out. If you find yourself deciding that tutoring isn't for you, please reach out to Mrs. Mallory so she can discuss with you next steps.

What if I have behavior issues in my group?

Speak to your site coordinator immediately. They are there to ensure the program runs smoothly at their school and are there to support you!
