What skills will the study of Drama teach?
As a citizen in this world, students need to know how to work collaboratively with other people, express their personal views, understand their view of others, and communicate clearly. Drama provides a framework for understanding people through the analysis of characters, playwrights and live performance work; as well as the opportunity to work collaboratively to create work that will express their own ideas.
Drama will teach you to…
Apply physical and vocal skills to communicate a character
Analyse the effectiveness of your own use of body language and vocal expression
Express your ideas within a group during collaborative creative tasks
Develop physical control through the development of performance work
Speak clearly to an audience of people
Communicate ideas through the application of drama techniques
Music plays an important role in academy life both inside and outside of your lessons developing a wide range of skill and opportunities to enjoy live music experiences and participate in music making in a range of genres. Name: Miss Wragg
Role: Teacher of Music and Head of Arts Faculty
Studied: BA (Hons) at The University of Sheffield
Performer: I have always had a passion for music. I was lucky enough to start piano lessons in primary school and when I got to secondary school I started to learn how to play the cornet. I was in some form of music group every day after school, brass bands, wind band, choir etc.
Since then I have sung in lots of different choirs, been in a rock band through college, a ska band through university and an all-female acoustic band with Mrs Littlewood. I am also a member of Barnsley Metropolitan Brass Band.
Musical Passions: My favourite band of all time are Queen – Freddie Mercury is THE greatest showman that ever lived. I love all kinds of music though.
Teacher: The thing that I love the most about being a music teacher is that absolutely anybody can be involved in, enjoy and be good at music. All you need is determination and patience.
Name: Mrs Walker
Role: Teacher of Drama
Studied: BA(Hons) at Bretton Hall College (The University of Leeds)
Performer: My love of performing began at primary school with our annual Christmas show. At high school I performed in everything I could! I played a lead role in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and in ‘Oliver’. I was lucky enough to travel to the Ukraine to perform this as part of an international arts festival. I also worked with Qdos Dance Theatre to further my experience. Since then my experience has included performing with Penistone Centre Stage Musicals and working with local professional theatre company ‘Very Serious Theatre’.
Theatrical passions: Pretty much anything but I love musical theatre. I was once invited backstage at Wicked and met the cast!
Teacher: My favourite part about being a teacher of performing arts is how much fun we have. I love watching my students’ confidence develop and seeing them realise just how creative they can be.
Name: Miss Colbourne
Role: Teacher of Drama and English
Studied: BA(Hons) in Drama with Theatre Studies at The University of Huddersfield
Performer: My love of performing began from a young age. I was always in the choir and loved to join in with the school production. I also went to a small performance group on a Saturday outside of school to continue this passion. I still perform now in a local performance group which is primarily singing but also has some acting/dancing elements. I am currently waiting to complete my AVCM in Musical Theatre.
Theatrical passions: Musicals - Shrek the Musical, Ghost the Musical, Annie and many many more!
Teacher: My favourite part of being a teacher of performing arts is watching my students grow in confidence and develop a love for the arts. I love being able to watch my students build their confidence which then also shows outside of the classroom.
