Arts Ambassadors

The SFUSD Arts Ambassadors are a diverse group of individuals and organizations from across our community, including arts teachers, students, coordinators, principals, teaching artists, and community-based arts partners. They have been selected for their outstanding contributions to promoting the vision and promise of the Arts Department and SFUSD.

This year's winners exemplify the creativity, passion, and dedication that make San Francisco's cultural programming truly exceptional. Through their innovative work, they have provided our students with unique experiences that have both delighted and educated.

Our Arts Ambassadors are not only members of the greater San Francisco community, but they also share a common goal of increasing access to the arts. As champions for the arts, they play a crucial role in building public awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of our vision. They serve as advocates who help lay the foundation for future growth and development in arts education, not only within SFUSD but also throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Please join us in congratulating and celebrating these remarkable individuals and organizations for their contributions to arts education and their dedication to enriching the lives of our students.

Kathleen Lussier-West, Lincoln

 High School

Arts Coordinator

I have a quote up in my classroom by James Baldwin that I look at everyday that sums up why I teach : "The place in which I'll fit will not exist until I make it."  I believe that it is my purpose as an arts educator-- to help students imagine, observe, practice using their creativity, and build skills to express themselves visually, so that they can create the world they want to live in.  I try to see and meet each student where they are and foster a classroom of kindness, fun, and hands on learning. I want students to leave my class with the inner feeling that they might just keep making art....  because they can.

TEACHERS

Monica Rivera, A.P. Giannini-Dance Instructor

Monica Rivera is a proud Honduran immigrant, who came to the United States when she was 6 years old. She fell in love with dance when she attended public schools in rural North Carolina. When she was in high school, her dance class was where she went to when navigating the complicated reality of being undocumented. She decided to study Dance Education at Meredith College. Her mission was to recreate her own version of the program that made sure she didn't fall through the cracks.

Monica started working with SFUSD in 2018, as the dance teacher at James Lick Middle School. In April 2021, with the help of her administrators, colleagues, students, and parents, Monica started the dance program at A. P. Giannini Middle School. Working from the ground up, she's worked with hundreds of amazing students, developed a robust curriculum, and collaborated with district officials to upgrade the dance infrastructure in her classroom. Her goals are to always make sure her students are challenged, push their creative limits, and find happiness in her class. She is honored to be able to do this everyday.

Ashli Fisher, Dance Instructor

Born and raised in Oakland California I have been teaching since I was twelve years old and I have been performing since the age of seven. I have always loved the arts especially dance and theatre and music ! I taught in dance studios ,after school programs, recreational programs and now the San Francisco unified school district. I am so happy to have been a full time itinerant dance teacher this past year and cannot wait to learn more next year.

Michael Govorchin, Music Instructor

 Peter Sroka, Music Instructor

Born and raised on the New Jersey Shore, Peter started singing in church and playing piano with Aunt Alice at about age 7.  Throughout childhood he enjoyed writing songs, drawing pictures, and performing.  When he was 10, his grandmother took him to Czechoslovakia to visit family and that changed him somehow.   First concerts:  Elton John, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel.

Peter performed multiple roles in plays and musicals at Monmouth University while earning a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.  Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Peace Corps and spent 3 years teaching in  Sierra Leone, West Africa.

When he returned he worked as a classroom teacher for Los Angeles public schools. (7 yrs).  During that time he played leading roles in musical theater productions throughout LA and vicinity.  National Tours (Sesame Street Live and Mikado)

Masters in International Education (Harvard U.)

Since joining SFUSD several years ago, he has taken students to perform at ACT (American Conservatory Theater), the De Young Museum, The ASIAN Museum, City Hall, The Philippine Consulate, and more.  Throughout the years, he has composed songs to teach and reinforce academic content.    Travel, Education, and the Arts have always been key to his identity and lifestyle, connectivity and creativity.  In fact, he met his husband Ernie/Ernesto in 1995, singing with GMCLA (Gay Men's Chorus of LA).   They have been in shows together throughout the years.    Peter is very close with his parents and brothers.  Most summers, they manage to reunite on the Jersey Shore.  He is grateful for the students, families, and educators he has come to know through SFUSD Arts and the El Dorado, Dolores Huerta, Cleveland, Bessie Carmichael, and Carver communities these past 15 years

Amanda Pailla Ulloa is more than deserving of the Art Ambassador Award for her outstanding dedication to using art to enrich her own learning while generously helping her peers develop their artistic talents. Whether in class or after school, Amanda eagerly shares the design ideas and techniques she has mastered in her art classes and art club with other students who want to improve their skills. She guides them patiently through executing complex concepts like perspective and shading until their abilities blossom. Amanda's passion for art is contagious - she talks about it enthusiastically in and out of the classroom, inspiring others to open their minds to art's power for creative self-expression. Casandra Villanueva Gonzalez - Hilltop High School

As a 17-year-old high school junior and a mom to a one-year-old son, I have found strength and inspiration through art to share about being a parent. I have used block printing to connect with my family and culture, and a podcast and poster as a way to share about being a mom. Art helps me express myself and tell my story.

We primarily serve low income youth and youth of color.

San Francisco Youth Theater

Emily Elion

San Francisco Youth Theatre (SFYT) transforms youth and communities through fully accessible opportunities in arts creation, education, and performance, fostering personal growth and creating lasting social impact. Founded in 2014 by current Executive Director Emily Klion, SFYT seeks to close the arts achievement gap for historically underserved youth, while elevating the genre of youth theatre through artwork that inspires social change.  Based in SF’s Mission District, SFYT provides year-round accessible arts training and performance opportunities for youth ages 4-24 through residencies at SFUSD schools, local CBOs, and at our onsite location. SFYT’s offers skill-building classes in acting, music, dance, movement, visual art, playwriting, and ensemble productions, taught by an exemplary team of multi-lingual Teaching Artists. Our student population includes youth with limited access to theatre arts, particularly those who are low-income, LGBTQIA+, immigrants, English language learners and youth with disabilities. SFYT serves over 1200 students a year in its school-day, afterschool, and summer programs. SFYT believes that all youth should have the opportunity to flourish creatively, express themselves, and create social change through active art making. Our goals include:

o        Providing accessible high-quality theatre arts classes and performance opportunities, onsite and in public schools.

o        Offering Spanish-language theatre classes for bilingual and monolingual Spanish-speaking youth.

o        Supporting emerging theatre professionals in arts careers through paid opportunities in acting, arts administration and teacher training.

o        Producing and presenting theatre that speaks to the unique sensibilities of youth, with outreach to new actors and theatergoers.

o        Building an equitable community through the performing arts, where diversity is embraced and celebrated.

African-American Shakespeare Company

Dallas Thomas

Our mission at African-American Shakespeare Company (AASC) is to re-engage communities of color with theatre in a meaningful and transformative way. We do this by highlighting our experiences and stories, providing actors of color with opportunities to master some of the world's greatest roles, and making theatre engagement and arts education accessible to communities lacking these resources. We believe that the arts can be a tool for closing the gap between opportunities and experiences available to historically excluded audiences.
