Plot Overview: When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

Critique: In my opinion, the most compelling aspect of the book would have to be the world-building and overall plot. It's been a while since I've read a book (especially one of the dystopian genre) that truly got me hooked and made me want to keep reading. I don't want to give any spoilers, but it was definitely a heartbreaker. 😩

I was not disappointed with this book. In fact, I was quite satisfied. I especially like the author's voice in the text as well. Oftentimes, a book will have an amazing premise and storyline but writing that makes me cringe on the inside. However, in The Darkest Minds, Bracken finds a way to make the protagonist's voice pure and easy to connect with.

Cover: The cover doesn't give away much information, but it does convey a dark and bold image, which fits the book pretty well. It is a black cover with a gritty, gold Psi symbol on it.

Star Rating: I would give this book 4.5 stars.

For those who love action-packed dystopian novels with a tad bit of romance, this book is for you. Highly recommend! 😜
