Title and Author: Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jiang

Plot Overview: Red Scarf Girl is about the author, Ji-li Jiang’s childhood during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It offers a first hand perspective on the Revolution as Ji-Li tries to navigate life after her father is arrested, her family is harassed by the government, and her home is searched and ruined. It is a book of battle between self and country.

Review: I think this book was beautiful and I really admire the authors transparency with her life during the era. I enjoyed it because it was emotional and paints a picture of the Cultural Revolution through an adolescence’s eyes. I highly recommend this book.

Cover Critique: I think the cover is very deep and meaningful to the story and becomes sad and joyous when the reader understands its true meaning at the end of the book.

Rating: 4/5 - Very nicely written and shows the authors intent clearly.
