Title and Author of the Book: Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott with Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis

Plot Overview: This book focused on Stella Grant, a girl living with cystic fibrosis, who meets fellow CFer Will Newman while staying at a hospital. We are introduced to the staff taking care of Stella and Will, the rules surrounding cystic fibrosis, and the inner turmoils of these patients. As the book continues, Stella and Will’s relationship progresses, leading them to break the most important rule for CFers: all cystic fibrosis patients cannot come within six feet of another cystic fibrosis patient. They decide to sacrifice a foot, but at what cost?

Critique: This book is coming out as a movie starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson in March of this year. Seeing as Haley is my favorite actress, I was highly motivated to read the book, hearing she was in the movie. I am not disappointed that I did. I knew beforehand very little about cystic fibrosis, and I liked that this book introduced readers into the world of someone who lives with CF every day. This was the first book in a very long time, where I actually was very happy with the way the story ends. This book was full of happy, funny, sad, and realistic emotions of not just a CFer, but a teenager as well. I definitely would recommend it.

Cover Critique: I think the cover is so beautiful and it ties into the story, which I later found out. That just made me appreciate it so much more.

Star rating: 4/5

She’s almost certain to be admitted to MIT—that is, if she survives to see her nineteenth birthday. Brianna has cystic fibrosis, and after her friend Molly died six months ago, it’s hard for Brianna to let go of the feeling that she’s next. Numbers make sense to Brianna—they give her something to think about besides her own crummy odds. To her great surprise, it is in math class that she discovers the infinity that exists between eighteen and nineteen..."
