Thank you so much to the parents who organised and supervised the large group of children at the PSL disco last week. We had over 120 in attendance over the course of the junior and senior events. It was due to the generosity of these parents that this event could be held and we are very grateful.
Shake Out and Tsunami Hikoi - and Important information for you to check and follow up
Last week we held a drill for the staff and children to practise our procedures in the case of a large earthquake. We all "dropped, covered and held" , then the whole school + visitors were gathered and accounted for on the Tsunami Assembly area (Top Turf) within five minutes and 26 seconds.
This is a good time for us all to check our systems for coping with the aftermath of a large earthquake / Tsunami.
Over the next week, your child(ren) will bring home a print out of the Student Profile Update Form - showing the details we currently have on file.
Please:
check the form carefully
update the form - adding or updating emergency contacts who have permission to collect your child in an emergency evacuation.
Please write their name(s), contact number, and address in the space provided.
Update any other relevant details (eg allergies, medical conditions)
sign the form
send the form back to school (even if no changes) by: Thursday 7 November
It is important that you understand that in the case of an emergency, your child(ren) would only be released to adults who are on their emergency contact list (not to other family, friends or neighbours who are not on their emergency contact list).
Please choose emergency contacts who live (or work) nearby, as access to the city may be restricted after a large earthquake.
No children would be allowed to walk, bike, bus or make their own way home in an emergency.
Thankfully most of SFDS School is within the Tsunami Safe Zone (the bottom courts are in the yellow zone): https://www.wremo.nz/assets/Tsunami-Maps/Wellington-/032-Owhiro-Island-Bay-Taputeranga.pdf
So that you know...
All classrooms, the library and the office have (orange) grab-bags of important items that are taken to the assembly area when the school is evacuated.
Emergency supplies are kept in the PE shed and the water is changed annually. We also have water purification tablets, and other necessary supplies.
In the case of an emergency at school, it is very unlikely that you would be able to get through to us via phone or email - all staff would be busy keeping the children calm and safe, and the phones may not be in service. But we would take very good care of your child(ren).
Here are the Tsunami zones in our area of Wellington. Most of the St Francis de Sales School property is in the safe zone (apart from the bottom courts).
Our assembly / reunification area is on the 'Top Turf' - up at the back of our school. It is from this area that you would be asked to collect your child(ren).
Fortunately the Island Bay Community Hub is located just up the road at Island Bay School. This is where we would accompany remaining children once access is safe. Several staff would remain with the children while at the Community Hub. The Hub has Civil Defence VHF radio for urgent communications, and is well stocked for managing the hours or days of isolation following a large earthquake.
Class Placements for 2025 - Parent Voice
In a few weeks we will be making decisions about class placement for 2025. These placements will be based on a variety of factors that influence learning, such as current progress, social and emotional needs, and the interests and talents of our teaching team.
Your contribution to this process is welcomed. We invite you to share your perspective on aspects that can support your child(ren)'s learning in this survey: https://forms.gle/FtPBfnZJi1Q7fh979
If you would rather speak face to face about this, please feel free to make a time to meet with Sarah or Mary-Angela. You are also welcome to email your thoughts:
Sarah Fountain, Deputy Principal (sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz)
Mary-Angela Tombs, Principal (principal@sfds.school.nz)
Please do not request specific teachers as it is usually not possible to fulfill such requests.
This consultation will close Wednesday 20 November, to allow us time to finalise class lists prior to the end of the school year.
All Saints Day
At the moment, many of you will be preparing for Halloween on 31 October. This came from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.
This Friday at 9:15am Mass, we will celebrate All Saints Day as our final school Mass for 2024. This is a celebration to honour people who led extraordinarily holy lives on earth and that the Church has canonised as saints. Across New Zealand, and especially here in Island Bay we have all been praying for years that Suzanne Aubert will be recognised as being a saint. This is called 'beatification'. You can read more here: https://www.suzanneaubert.co.nz/
Prayer for the Beatification of Venerable Suzanne Aubert
Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us that as often as we show compassion to the least of your brothers and sisters, we show it to you. Hear our prayers that the intercession of Venerable Suzanne Aubert, who supported the Māori people and devoted her life to the poor, the sick and the underprivileged, and whom the Church has declared to be one of your true and humble followers, will be recognized in a miraculous healing by the Church and will lead to her beatification.
Amen.
