Artist’s Reflection
I was inspired to create this painting, “Trees of Life”, by the Sisters of Charity planting the London Plane Trees that presently line Seton Hill Drive. Attending Seton Hill as a commuter gave me the opportunity to admire these majestic works of art by nature as I made my way up the driveway each day. Naturally being somewhat anxious as a college student, this short trip had a calming effect on me. I felt empowered with the trees looming overhead, making me feel more confident to face the day’s challenges. As I reached the top, I began my day relaxed and excited. After my day ended and I made my way back down through the trees, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I could feel the trees congratulating me on another day well done. Although I have many fond memories of my experience at Seton Hill, this was one of my favorites. I wanted to create a painting to honor these London Plane Trees and the Sisters of Charity, who took the time to plant them, and for caring to make the campus better every day.
Hidden within the painting are symbols, words, and other meanings that reflect the love of the trees and their history. The longer you look at the painting, the more you will find. The trees stand tall showing the empowerment and majestic beauty of each tree along Seton Hill Drive. The sun shines over them showing the positive effects the trees have with representing “the light,” God, over Seton Hill. The light also represents the warmth, happiness, and the homely feelings of the Hill. If you look carefully into the tree branches, there is a cross representing the faith of the Sisters of Charity. The cross is illuminated by the sunlight, emphasizing the power of faith. The shadows of the trees show different symbols of love and or reveal historical facts, such as the 1924 planting date. “Trees of Life” reflects my memories of Seton Hill.
