Title: A Goat Among Sheep

My piece, entitled Goat Among Sheep, is a linocut print that aims to address Seton Hill’s pillar of Learning as a Catholic Institution. Learning does not only occur in the classroom, it also occurs in individual experiences, and a significant amount of learning happens during the transition to college life. When one is living in a new place, around new people, and a new environment, sometimes, it can feel like you aren’t in the right place. Or perhaps even lacking a sense of belonging while trying to navigate new social experiences. The imagery used in my print addresses this feeling, by placing an injured goat, among a herd of sheep, of whom are onlookers to the goat’s attempt to heal from its injuries. These wounds suggest that this creature has been through something painful and seemingly repeated. The sheep notice this creature in what is their habitat, and seem puzzled by the overall scenario, as they stare with curious eyes. The color of the ink, of which was achieved by mixing red and blue, is a dark pinkish purple. The choice of using this color is a nod to how this can specifically be a feminine experience. Therefore, the central themes surrounding Goat Among Sheep include adjusting to the college experience, and learning about where you belong in a seemingly unfamiliar environment. If you see yourself in the goat, remember, it is possible to heal, rise again, and continue to navigate this new world that you have found yourself in.
