Battle of the Bulge

The battle of the Bulge - Bastogne (North)

BASTOGNE – MALMEDY – HOUFFALIZE - US-military cemeteries of Henri-Chapelle and Luxembourg/Hamm (final resting place of Gen. Patton) – La Gleize – Cheneux – Bastogne War Museum

Fox Holes of Foy – Monuments Big Red One and of the E-company- different German and American tanks

We leave Brussels at 07.30 am and need only 90 min to reach the US cemetery of HENRI-CHAPELLE, where almost 9000 GI’s are resting. Then we continue along the Bulge’s north-eastern frontline and are admiring in BÜLLINGEN/BUDGENBACH the monument honoring the fierce resistance of THE BIG RED ONE, so important to delay the German offensive in its beginning days.

At Malmedy/Baugné we are visiting the Memorial for the 84 American Prisoners, murdered by the SS. After our optional lunch stop in Malmedy we follow the valley of the Amblève river towards Trois Ponts, where this branch of the German offensive was also blocked by blowing up the bridge. Our next stop is the famous King Tiger tank in La Gleize, another spot of fierce American resistance to delay the German offensive. From here we follow the alternative road that was taken by the Waffen SS and reach the village of Cheneux, where a monument is remembering all the fighting. We then reach the bridge over the river Lienne, that was destroyed the 18th of December by the US troops, and thus obliging the SS tanks with Peiper to return as the other bridges en route could not take the weight of heavy German tanks.

Via Habiémont, we reach the E25 highway towards Houffalize, very severely damaged during the battle. Here we can see an almost undamaged German Panther tank and some pictures illustrating the level of destruction of the city. From here we continue again on the E25 highway straight to Luxembourg/Hamm, where we arrive at the US military cemetery where General G. Patton is resting amidst 4500 US soldiers.

Back in the direction of Bastogne and we start our visit at the blockhouse which Lt. Boggess reached the 26th of December, thus terminating the besieging of Bastogne. We stop at the Place Mac Auliffe with the Sherman tank and the monument for General Mac Auliffe, and drive to the MARDASSON MEMORIAL and WAR MUSEUM, which you have time to visit. We finish our tour by driving along the monument for the E-company and see some of the remaining Foxholes in the woods. Return to Brussels.
