Welcome to the Wildlife and Environmental Sensor Technology Laboratory (WEST Lab)
Our lab is dedicated to the development of innovative sensor systems that advance our understanding and preservation of the natural world. We specialize in creating environmental monitoring technologies, with a particular focus on water quality monitoring and animal tracking and movement analysis. By integrating cutting-edge sensor technologies with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, we aim to provide tools that enhance both scientific research and conservation efforts.
Our interdisciplinary approach allows us to tackle a wide range of challenges, from monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems to tracking the movements and behaviors of wildlife. Through collaboration and innovation, we strive to push the boundaries of what is possible in environmental sensing and tracking technology.
In our lab, we are actively pursuing several research areas that leverage advanced sensor systems to address pressing environmental and ecological issues. Our current research focuses on:
Environmental Monitoring Systems: We are developing advanced sensor networks for monitoring water quality in various aquatic environments. These systems use fluorescence-based detection methods to provide real-time data on water conditions, supporting efforts to maintain healthy ecosystems and manage water resources effectively.
Animal Tracking and Movement Analysis: Our work in this area involves designing and implementing electronic systems for tracking wildlife, with a particular focus on crocodile movements. These tracking systems are designed to operate in challenging environments, providing crucial data for understanding animal behavior and supporting conservation initiatives.
Algae Growth Monitoring and Control: We are also exploring the use of sensor technologies to monitor and control algae growth in aquatic systems. By integrating real-time data collection with advanced analysis tools, we aim to optimize conditions for algae growth, with applications ranging from environmental management to sustainable biofuel production.
Our lab is not only focused on developing new technologies but also on ensuring that these tools are accessible and impactful. We are committed to creating robust, user-friendly systems that can be deployed in a variety of settings, contributing to a broader understanding of environmental dynamics and helping to address critical global challenges.
