Welcome everyone to History!!
In Year 7, we begin with some introductory work in the skills required to become a good historian. We will practise and develop these skills as the building blocks of history. After that, we start looking at British history beginning in 1066. We will work our way through the main issues, focusing on people who had an impact on our history and shaped the world we live in today. You will develop key skills such as analysing sources, evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions.
Research / Investigate
TASK Welcome to Selby High School. Use these documents to find out about the history of the school badge. Perhaps look into an aspect of the history in more detail or link it to interviewing someone in your family who may also have been to Selby High. For example, you could find out what the school badge used to be like, or what the RAMC did during WWI

TASK On your next walk, look for any interesting historical buildings or memorials. Can you find out something about it? Perhaps you could write up your research or sketch it or make a model
TASK In Medieval times knights would decorate their shield with pictures, symbols, shapes and colours to reflect their family. You could look up your family name and see if it already has a coat or arms, or you could design your own. Perhaps even make your own decorated shield!!
You could even make up your own motto like this one Virtue mine Honour.
There are lots of good examples you could research to help you with your own design.
TASK Investigate the history or your favourite sport or hobby. This link for example will take to a history of football https://www.footballhistory.org/
Perhaps create a poster of the history
Skills
TASK Understanding how time passes and is measured is really important in History. It is also important to understand how and where things changed and developed across different parts of the world. This clip takes you through a tour of world history – it is a challenging watch but give it a go and perhaps research a time or event that you have never heard of before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__BaaMfiD0Q
TASK Chronology is the ordering of things into time order. Look at this example and see if you can match the fashion with the date and then order the dates. What about current fashion? What might that look like? [link to document needed clothes chronology]
TASK Anachronisms are things that do not ‘fit’ in a certain time period. Look at this example from the Stone Age and see if you can find some examples. Perhaps research the Stone Age for yourself so you know why they are wrong. Maybe draw your own historical scene and put in some anachronisms for someone else to find [link to document needed What are historical anachronisms]
Watch
TASK Watch a Horrible Histories story and be inspired. Find out more about the person or time. You could try and re-create a scene, or the life of a person, or maybe make something connected with the clip or book!
TASK Talk to someone at home about their school life. You could write up your findings ready to share in school. Perhaps someone you know came to Selby High years before? Think about the questions you could ask, perhaps things like:
What subjects did you study?
Who were your best friends?
How did you get to school?
What did you like / dislike the most about school?
TASK Read a Horrible Histories story and be inspired. Find out more about the person or time. You could try and re-create a scene, or the life of a person, or maybe make something connected with the clip or book!
TASK Learn about the history of York during the time of the Viking. Explore the artefacts on the Yorvik website. Perhaps write a small story about who might have worn or used the item and what happened to it!
