Welcome to the Drama Department.
For many of you, drama will be a new experience and one we hope you will enjoy. You will have one lesson per week which is a fun, practical lesson. You will learn about basic drama skills and also look at different types of theatre like pantomime, look at issues where you can discuss your own opinions and read books which you turn into your own performance.
Drama is an important subject because through our studies, we are actually using some of the most important skills you will need to become successful in school. In Drama, you will work individually and in small and whole class activities.
Research / Investigate
Find out more about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its author, Roald Dahl, by visiting
https://www.roalddahl.com/roald-dahl/stories/a-e/charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory.
Here you can read about the background to the story, the characters, and the additional child called Miranda Mary Piker who was not included in the final book...
Skills
Try out some of the tongue twisters below OR research one of your own:
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
She sells seashells on the seashore.
The shells she sells are seashells I’m sure.
So if she sells seashells on the seashore,
Then, I’m sure she sells seashore shells.
Once you have mastered your tongue twister, experiment with changing your voice. You can change the pitch (high/low), pace (speed), volume, and tone (the mood - happy, sad etc.) You could also try an accent. This will help you develop your vocal skills.
Watch
As well as the film, Charlie and the Chocolate factory has been made into a stage musical. Watch this trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYumju08ApA&feature=youtu.be
which gives you a taste of how they tell the magical story on stage.
Listen
Listen to the musical theme for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQa-HmUMfOA.
This music is played before the film begins. Think about the following questions:
How does the music make you feel?
What do you imagine as you listen to the music? What do you expect will happen in the story?
How does the music make you feel this way? (Think about the speed, volume, use of instruments etc.)
Read
Violet Beauregarde is one of the children who visits the Chocolate Factory. She is obsessed with chewing gum! Here is a monologue she performs:
https://centre-stage.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Violet.pdf.
A monologue is a long speech the character speaks directly to the audience. Read the monologue first, then imagine you are Violet and try reading it as her character. The words in italics should be emphasized, which means putting stress on them to make them stand out.
