In the Art Department, we understand that we are all individuals. Some of us are good at drawing and painting whilst others are good at making things, mixed media or photography.
In Year 7, you will begin by looking at the Elements of Art and basic drawing skills. We will then explore Still Life and Cubism where you will develop your 2D skills and also look at colour mixing. You will also have the chance to look at the work of Hundertwasser where you will develop your 3D designing, making and creative skills.
Research / Investigate
ART KNOWLEDGE: Find out what the ‘Formal Elements of Art’ are. These are key skills that you will develop in your first year and continue to build on throughout your art study.
THE HISTORY OF ART : Art History is also really important, it shows us how art, techniques and styles have developed over time but it also shows us how life has changed and gives us insight into culture and diversity.
TASK: See if you can research an Art History time line - have a look at all the different Art periods, Movements in Art and Styles.
Skills
You will develop lots of skills using a wide range of materials and techniques during your Art study. You will also be encouraged to develop your wider creativity and your own ideas.
Pencil control and basic drawing skills will always be a key aspect.
Line Drawing, pencil shading and colouring skills are a good start point and practicing these will really help.
Creativity and creative thinking, sketching ideas and doodling also help to develop wider skills. Doodling simple shapes, figures, objects, words and lettering can be really effective at supporting creativity. It is also super relaxing and excellent to support mindfulness.
Watch
Art is hugely important in our lives. It is everywhere!!! From the design of wallpaper in your homes and the fabric and designs of your clothes to the advertisements on tv, web pages, characters in video games and cartoons to pictures on walls and art work you chose for your homes.
Art also gives us great balance in our lives. Watch the clip to learn more!
Listen
Listening to music whilst you work can aid concentration. Lots of Artists listen to music whilst they work as it can aid creativity and also assist the mood you are trying to capture. Relaxing mindful music is often favoured but if working on something more dramatic or lively a bolder piece of music would be preferable. Instrumental music is preferred as words can often distract.

Have a go at some of the tasks from the ‘Watch’ section of this clip.
Any of the following will help to develop your skills.
Mindful colouring - try mixing and blending some colours together - use a colouring book or create a simple design to work into
A doodle a day!! Choose a different theme each day!
Use an image or design from your day as inspiration
Use a different technique each day. Pencil, ink , colour, shade etc
If you are feeling adventurous then you could fill a page a day!
Blind Drawing - Choose an interesting object that belongs to you (trainer, phone, clock, lamp). Place your pencil on the paper and look only at the object. Now try and draw the object without looking down at your drawing. Once finished have a look. Can you tell what it is? Can a family member identify it??
Have another go!
*This is a good hand, eye coordination experiment.
5 Minute Drawing - Draw an object but only give yourself 5 minutes - how much can you get done, what should you draw first, what should you leave to last, how quickly should you work to make as accurate as possible in the time?
*This task helps you to prioritise the key aspects first.
Natural Forms and detail - Find a small natural form with interesting detail- flower, leaf, shell etc. Now try and draw an interesting area of this to fill a piece of A4 paper. Pay close attention to patterns, textures and surface details. Shade in your study.
*This tasks will help you to draw much larger and record finer details.
