The pandemic changed the way the people of Borivali west's I. C. Colony decoded and moved around their spaces. Parks and playgrounds that once flourished were now closed down and the ones left open were converted to makeshift Covid vaccination centers that functioned haphazardly. Children played on the roads in front of the parks instead of within them. The shops had tarp-like walls attached as facades. And they indeed were facades that hid the shop from the police as they went on their inspections. Within business continued as usual.
The syntax of the building formed from these ideas of how our use of public space has changed since the pandemic. The stairs that merge with the walls to form levels along with the extended corner walls which formed external more personal spaces formed the design syntax of this building.
The building is brought onto the footpath from which the plinth rises as if to connect the building to the road itself making it more accessible to all people. This idea of access continues throughout the building with the steps and stairs that connect the road to the levels and in turn to the roof, encouraging people to hang around and lounge around in this space. The inside can be used as the Covid center during the pandemic with will later also be used to loiter around.
The human scale of the building help move across the stairs and steps. The corners that are formed by these steps also provide spaces for people to sit around almost as if the building is inside out.
