The study for this project started with exploring the neighbourhood and observing the changed practices due to the pandemic. The revised practices documented were a prayer hall converted into a vaccination centre. Activities like meditation, yoga, singing of devotional songs, and meetings that used to happen in this hall have completely stopped and are now only being used for vaccination. The other observation a was change in crowd pattern and worship practices at the temples. As people are not allowed to go inside the temple, however, they pray from outside not being able to see the deities.
The project is further intended to create a space where all these activities which have stopped could happen simultaneously along with the current activity. The prayer hall which is converted for vaccination was chosen as the area of intervention and redesigned for meditation, yoga, walkthrough temple, clinic, waiting/sitting activities.
The idea of syntax comes from the observation of change in worship practice. The temple becomes a thin building on the periphery which is also the boundary wall and the facade of the entire building. People can walk through the temple and it can also work as a distant temple. The pedestrians and people from their vehicles can take darshan from a distance. The walls of the other two rooms are broken down into c-shaped elements which creates a semi enclosed space for meditation and vaccination. The entire building is a peripheral building and the space in the middle is a small open to sky amphitheater for activities like the singing of devotional songs. The Temple has folding jali doors which can be closed at night. The new design also has waiting space for vaccination.
