The area i am observing is Borivali West which is in the northern suburb of Mumbai, Maharashtra. The title of my project is The Barter Wall.
Observations: The idea of walk and path changed drastically during COVID, before the idea of walk was closely related to commute or classes for students and public gardens but, that changed after the pandemic due to closing of various spaces. people started occupying various roads in LIC colony as a path for walking. Then i also observed a sports complex that had turned into a vaccination centre and observed its working . I closely looked at a cluster of informal settlements and saw how the pandemic had affected them , pandemic had affected jobs more people staying inside lack of resources and money . During that time the community helped each other in various aspects such as lending clothes , money and food items such as grains, milk, homemade food . they also looked out for each other in terms of looking for job opportunities. their sense of community increased during COVID.
The site: the site is a triangular space that is located right next to the community i observed. it also shares its boundary with a school. as it is a closed community it was important that the site was as close to them as possible. the site also has a small temple that belongs to the community.
Program: the program that i wanted to provide for was a space as an extension to the community that could give them a space for barter and chit fund office. redesigning the mandir and create a space for vaccination centre. an open air amphitheater
Design Process: The design syntax came from the varying plinths that were present throughout the site , that give rise to stacking as a program . Combining that with the idea of wall formed the folding wall that created two distinct spaces as the inside and the outside . The inside space could also be used as a storage unit. The outside space can be used as an open air amphitheater as an extension to the school. the new space also acts as a boundary wall for the school .The final design created a space that inculcated the two trees that were present on the site. There is ample amount of natural light that can enter inside the building. There are sections that are show the inside through the vaccination centre and how the space gets used on the inside and outside . Inside people can sit on the seats provided as waiting space and a space provided for the vaccination to happen . On the outside people can occupy the amphitheater and the roof and use the ledge to sit .There is also a section that goes through the chit fund and barter space showing the functionality of the space. Also the mandir that gets reconfigured right besides it.
Post Pandemic: After the pandemic the barter space can go on and the vaccination centre can be used as a library as an extension to the school. The roof structure can be used as shelves to accommodate books and magazines etc.
