The location of my site intervention and observations is in south Mumbai. The observations I documented include how the existing shops have been extended on the plinth and functioning with half shutters on, how the plinth has turned into a temporary home for the homeless people, how the shopkeepers have developed the idea of seat shops, how the loiterers have started using the plinth for chit chat.
These observations helped me identify the new elemental relationships that people have formulated with the plinth.
Based on these observations I thought of introducing programs such as, creating an informal hanging out space. Making a pavilion where all the relationships with the plinth could be integrated.
I chose a site which was located in South Mumbai near J.J. Hospital. It is a small edge(thoroughfare) on the periphery of the road. It is an edge with shops on either side.
The syntax I used , on which I developed my module structure was how the shops, the sleeping spaces(terraces), the sitting spaces for the loiterers will coexist with respect to the plinth. The syntax helped develop certain diagrams and create a strategy by modulating the plinth in a way where all the programs could be integrated.
Main aim was to create a sleeping space for the homeless people in the form of terraces, sitting spaces for the loiterers which were modulated from the plinths and shops were integrated by keeping social distance in mind. The plan shows how all the spaces come together and how there is a continuous circulation within the spaces. The sections help identify different plinth levels and how it has been modulated to create sunken and high spaces as per the needs of the people.
