The pandemic changed the market space and the practices of sellers a lot in Sinnar city, Nashik. Before the pandemic, the market was settled on the edge of a small road and therefore it was temporary as the sellers were wrapping their goods everyday and limited availability of space made it more crowded. So to avoid that, the whole market was shifted on the playground during the pandemic which provided a large and good workspace to sellers and therefore it became a permanent market space which then led to emerging of very new practices of sharing space, sleeping, gathering together for many activities emerged and workspace became their home.
The idea behind the project was to create a hybrid space for all the programmes happening on ground and in the market i.e playing, selling, shopping, leisure area. So the design emerged by keeping the tradition of the market on edge and in a grid of shade and space and also adding a surface over the shade to provide space for other programmes.
Then specifically, the design will have a market area and leisure space on top of that. So in market space, there will be walking space for shoppers on both sides and a sitting and display area in the middle which will also provide storage space under the display desk. And in the leisure space above the market, there will be long benches in the middle and walkways on both sides. And about the stairs, they will be facing to ground and 10 m wide in three parts, so the market area won't be blocked from that side.
And after the pandemic, when the playground will be in use again for play, the wide staircase could be used as spectators viewing area in which people could sit on the stairs and watch the matches or the play from there.
