MINIATURE

AS WORLD - AS METHOD

Miniature has been thought of as a craft that lacks seriousness and relevance but it has moved beyond scaling objects with artists starting to deconstruct the set stereotypes. It’s about constructing worlds that take the viewer on a journey, pushing them to engage with the carefully conceptualised elements by giving them a new lens.

Throughout the duration of the course, we struggled with differentiating between miniature as objects and miniaturisation as a method as well as defining the two. We came across a blog called ‘Miniature Manifesto’ ( Louise Krasniewicz) which helped in further clarifications of certain concepts. Miniaturisation can be about delving into fictional realms that defy the logics of physics by combining familiar and fantastical elements or making objects that are a representation or symbol of something else.

A miniaturist can be thought of as an individual whose practice is about crafting miniature objects, engaging with the materials involved and detailing them in the physical realm. In this sense, miniaturists should be distinguished from artists, writers and other practitioners who use miniaturisation as a method or medium for a specific purpose or a certain time period.

The module introduced us to various readings and films which exposed us to several concepts and possibilities within the domain of miniaturisation as well as why miniatures are universally appealing.
