Studying Tips

Looking for ways to improve your understanding and your grade? Try some of these helpful studying tips:

Start Studying Early:

  • Begin preparing for the quiz/test as early as possible.

  • As soon as you know the assessment date, write in your agenda 1 week ahead of time to start studying.

  • Some students find that the most effective way to study is to spend 15-20 minutes a day or every other day preparing for the upcoming assessment instead of waiting until the night before.

  • Come in for help or sign up for office hours as soon as you are confused. Don't wait until the morning of the test to come in and ask about the entire Module.

  • Part of studying early is to complete your homework everyday. This way you can be an active participant when we review it in class and you will know right away if you don't understand something.

  • Rework any missed problems on your homework assignments. If after attempting these problems again you are still confused, check in with your study buddy or come in for help.

Rework Problems From the Class Activity:

  • Take some time to rework problems you completed in class, especially if you received help on them. You need to actually work out the problems again on a separate paper (you can either print another copy from the support website or do it on a blank piece of paper), not just read through them.

Rework Homework Problems You Missed:

  • Every problem on your homework should be corrected.

  • It would be helpful to rework any problem you originally missed.

  • Revisit the problems you got wrong again as you study for your assessment.

Do Extra Problems:

  • Your module has many extra practice problems you can work through.

  • Check the student support website for additional practice worksheets

  • Check Google Classroom for additional practice worksheets or websites.

  • If you get stuck while working through the extra problems (or you are getting them wrong), come in for help. The earlier you do this, the less anxious you will be heading into an assessment and the more comfortable you will feel in class.

Rework Problems From the Class Activities:

  • The lessons/class activities we complete in class have similar directions and examples as the problems on the assessments and homework. Reread the directions so you know what you are expected to do for each section. Practice all parts of the problems and practice showing all of your steps.

  • When completing warm ups, write down the original questions as well as all of your work and notes from the class discussion. These can serve as a good study guide.

Create Your Own Practice Test:

  • Try to find problems similar to ones we have had on warm ups, homework, and class activities for the current module. You can show your practice test to Mrs. Coulter before or after school to see if you are missing any of the main ideas or types of problems.

  • When there is a Terascore/Quizlet available make sure to complete it. This is a way for me to provide you with even more valuable practice.

  • You can use the extra practice posted on Mrs. Coulter's website to help you create your own practice test.

Make Flashcards:

  • For modules with new vocabulary (like properties or geometric terms), make flashcards that have the word on one side and the definition with a mathematical example on the other.

  • You can do this for directions as well. If you struggle with understanding the directions on assessments, make flashcards that have the directions on one side and what steps you need to complete on the other.

  • You can also do this for formulas. Write the formula on one side and a labeled picture with a mathematical example on the other.

Come to Office Hours for Help/Make an Appointment:

  • If you do not understand something, be sure to ask for help. You can ask Mrs. Coulter, a parent, sibling, friend, or study buddy. It is better to ask for help as soon as you are feeling confused. If you wait, you may fall further behind.

  • You can ask during class, attend office hours, attend tutoring, or make an appointment with Mrs. Coulter to get additional help or clarification.

  • Do not wait until the day of the test to try and get all of your questions answered. Plan ahead.

Work Together:

  • Studying is more fun if you have someone to work with like a friend, study buddy, parent, teacher...

  • Choose your study partner wisely. Make sure the person is someone who will keep you focused, on task, and you work well with.

  • Ask your study partner to quiz you. This way you don't already know the answer ahead of time.

  • Clearly explain your solving process to your study partner using proper terminology and examples (pretend you are teaching it to them).

Have Confidence and Be Prepared...You CAN do it!
