Welcome to LCC Surf Lifesaving! This is one of the most unique high-school classes available anywhere, and I congratulate you on your choice! Not only will you develop your skills in the ocean, but you will improve your fitness, make new friends, and learn skills that may one day save a life. At times, cold water and early mornings may be challenging, but I promise you will be happy you chose this class.
Course Content: The majority of time in this class is devoted to developing your fitness, skills, and knowledge surrounding the ocean. The best way to do that, of course, is to spend as much time in the water as possible. In addition to water activities, students will:
learn the history of the beaches in Encinitas.
understand the unique land and ocean features of each beach in the area, and the challenges they may present to beachgoers, surfers, and lifeguards.
learn about fauna that may be encountered in an ocean environment.
receive training in basic first aid skills and an introduction to numerous life saving techniques.
gain valuable information on how to earn a job as an ocean lifeguard.
Priorities: You, the student, are my top priority as a teacher. My focus is on your health and wellness, and I want this class to contribute to your well-being. If you ever feel that you are unable to fulfill any course requirements, please talk to me so we can strategize a way to make adjustments while still accomplishing the course objectives. Please know that every adult on campus, myself included, is always willing to listen.
