Science Olympiad is one of our active clubs at LCC. It focuses on engaging, interacting, and learning new things in the science world. It allows people of similar interest to collaborate together and compete to show others what they know. Senior club president, Emily Neil, has shared some information about the club, and what they do.
"The science Olympiad team competes in the national science Olympiad, a competition which includes about 25 different events within areas including biology, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. Throughout the school year, the team prepares for the competition by studying or building projects for their specific events. The team has 2 members compete in each event, so most students compete in about 3-4 events. In March, we had our regional tournament and qualified for the state competition for the first time in LCC’s history!" said Neil.
The club has many of ideas for the upcoming school year and its events. This includes more competitions, meetings, and practice.
"In the future, I think we would like to compete at the State tournament. Each year, the team get’s more and more competitive. In the future, we could succeed at the state or national level. During club meetings at the beginning of the year, we plan the logistics of the competition. This includes assigning events, collecting funds, etc. The rest of our meetings are used to prepare for the competition by studying, building, and collaborating," said Neil.
"The club meets about every other Tuesday during lunch in Mr. Ever’s classroom. The Science Olympiad team is a great way to pursue more unique interests in science at a very high level. Students typically do not have the opportunity to learn about areas like astrophysics, botany, and Cybersecurity in school, but Science Olympiad offers that opportunity. The club environment is very relaxed...it’s a place for people who like science to pursue their interests without tons of pressure," said Neil.
If you are interested in all things science, think about joining the Science Olympiad Club next year! What do you have to lose?
