The La Costa Canyon Track team is in full swing, with CIF and other big meets coming up soon. People from all different backgrounds are on our track team, because the team has so many different events to offer! From sprints to long distance to field events, track has something for everyone. One member on our LCC track team, Senior Matthew Schoen, has been running with us for four years, and has some updates about the 2022 season.
"The 2022 season has been great so far. I've dealt with injuries for the past two years so to be finally healthy and just be able to compete has been amazing! I've taken my 400m personal record from 57.2 seconds to 53.49 seconds as of April 2nd and both my coach and I think 51.90 - 52.1 is easily possible within the next two weeks. Before league and CIF, I plan on running the 200m and am looking for a time somewhere in the 22.9 - 23.3 range."
Looking at the team as a whole, there are so many Mavericks that are having great seasons so far.
Ian Seifert, who also had a 2021 season plagued with injury, is also setting personal records. He opened up with a solid 52.88 in the 400m and has brought it down to 51.38 which makes him #2 in the league and #21 in San Diego as of April 5th. Jason Wells is currently ranked #17 in the 100m within San Diego with an 11.09 and #18 in the 200m within San Diego with his 22.68.
Iliana Downing currently ranks #10 in the 200m within San Diego and #4 in school history with her 25.81. She is also #8 in San Diego in the 400m with 59.00, and #7 in San Diego with a 12' 2 Pole Vault.
Aidan Flood is #14 in San Diego in the 110m Hurdles with 16.42 and is #6 in San Diego with 41.36 in the 300m hurdles.
Delaney Magers ranks #8 in San Diego in the 100m Hurdles with 16.20.
Our relay teams are also doing well with the girls 4x100 being ranked #6 in San Diego and the 4x400 at #5 in San Diego with 4:05.85.
The boy's 4x100 is #16 in San Diego and #24 in San Diego in the 4x400m. The team is consistently setting PRs and improving with each and every meet!.
"As of right now, it looks like a large portion of us will be going to league / CIF. In terms of preparation, workouts will become lower volume, but much faster, and when you race, you don't race for time but rather race to place in the top three spots to advance to the next meet," said Schoen.
Along with the successful and competitive environment of the track team, members also have lots of fun in their family like team; it's a great way to meet new people, and build stronger relationships.
"This year, the team environment is a bit different with DJ now being our head coach. It was rough at first because he wasn't used to having full control of the team but it's been really cool to see him step up and grow more confident each week as a leader and decision-maker. As far as the athlete-to-athlete environment, this is easily the closest I've felt with the team in the last four years. Everyone gets along and cheers each other on in practice and competition. It's an extremely positive and encouraging environment that allows everyone to grow and push themselves to be better!" said Schoen.
Track is for everyone!
You don't need to be a CIF class runner to join the team. Numerous members are in their first year of running, or have little to no past experience. The main goal of our track team is to build your relationship with a healthy lifestyle while also having fun!
"If you don't have a spring sport or a sport in general, Track & Field is an amazing way to get in shape and grow connections within the LCC community. It's an extremely accessible sport in that there's something for everybody. If you're someone who's technical and likes to be explosive, you can sprint / hurdle. If you're more strategic and don't like the brute speed aspect of sprinting, you can run distance or Cross Country. Maybe you're not into running but you still like the explosive aspect of sprinting? You can long jump, triple jump, and/or high jump. If you like hitting the weight room and have good upper body strength, you can throw shot put, discus, or pole vault! There's a wide variety of events and it doesn't matter your body type, there's going to be something you'll excel at. Even though it is an individual sport, your teammates or "training partners" and coaches will be there to support you every step of the way!" said Schoen.
Sadly, the 2022 track season is soon coming to a close, but if you are interested in joining the track team, there is always next year! Opportunities like the LCC Cross County team, which is a Fall Sport, has a similar team environment and running lifestyle that can prepare you for the Spring Track season.
