Track and Field is in full swing. From the 1600 to pole shot put, LCC Track has it all. To learn more about the team and how it works, I talked to the head track and field coach, DJ.
"I been coaching here at LCC for about 6 years and I love every minute of it. I ran track in college and placed 3rd at nationals. I still hold the school record for 400 hurdles and 4 by 4 relay," said DJ.
Although every member of the track team is working hard and getting PR's this season, DJ has a few names he thinks are very mentionable.
"The team is looking great so far, we still have a lot of work to do but so far I am very excited about my team. We have athletes such as Jay Wells, Gionna, Jacob N and seven who are my seniors who are beasting it up right now. We also have up and coming young athletes such as Coby, Kai and Kaitlin," said DJ.
DJ's favorite part of coaching is seeing the progress that his athletes make throughout the season.
"My favorite part about coaching is seeing my athletes improve week by week. When I am having a bad day I look forward to going to practice because I know my athletes are going to cheer me up. I also love watching them compete and most of all winning. When they win, I win and all I coach are winners. But most importantly, I love being a role model to these kids and being someone they can trust and talk to and being a person they can rely on," said DJ.
Looking more at how the team works, if you asked a track member what their favorite part of the team was, it's a good bet that they will say "DJ Fun Day."
"On Mondays we do this thing called " DJ Fun Day". The kids love these types of days because it pushes them not only physically but mentally. Tuesdays are our speeds days and Wednesdays are blocks and relays and then Thursday we compete," said DJ.
If you are thinking of joining track and field, there is always next year to join! Here is what DJ has to say to those thinking of joining the team:
"Come and give it a try, I know track season goes on the same time as other club sports but I always work with those athletes so that way they are able to do both. Track and Field is really a mental sport and some of the things that are great is that if you work hard and never give up you will see positive results and the best feeling is knowing that you did that yourself," said DJ.
