Exploring Spanish Immersion is an active club at La Costa Canyon, which focuses on educating and embracing the Spanish culture and Spanish speaking cultures all over the world. Seniors Camila Ruiz and Weston Wilmot, are the presidents of Exploring Spanish Immersion.
"The main purpose of Spanish Immersion is to immerse yourself in the heritage and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. We really wanted to meet people from other countries and hope that they will share their experiences so we can all learn and also make new friends. It's a great way to meet people you may have things in common with as well, which can be comforting if you are an immigrant or don't identify with traditional American culture," said Ruiz.
Exploring Spanish Immersion do several activities to become more familiar with the Spanish world, including: crafts, food, group activities, and other immersive tasks to learn more about the cultures around them.
"Some activities we have done this year include decorating sugar skulls in celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, sampling some traditional Colombian candies, following a Zumba dance on YouTube, and learning about the cultures of various countries. My favorite memory from the Spanish Immersion club is by far decorating the sugar skulls because we got to use a bunch of bright-colored frosting to create intriguing designs and then bring them home afterward. Many people thought you eat them, which you can, but it's hard as a rock and straight sugar," said Ruiz.
Spanish Immersion is a great balance of learning and fun, many well achieved students in our community decided to take the club to better prepare themselves for current or upcoming classes.
"There are many IB candidates that come to improve their Spanish along with a number of English Language Learners. Also, kids from AP Spanish joined so they could become more comfortable speaking primarily in Spanish. That's one of the main reasons why I would recommend Spanish Immersion to any fellow Maverick; even if they aren't at a higher level, because it's an opportunity to broaden your worldly perspective. Spanish culture differs from country to country despite similarities, and it's fun to learn while simultaneously improving your Spanish," said Ruiz.
Spanish Immersion has a simple and clear goal: Educating others about the Spanish culture in a fun, expressive way.
"My favorite part of the club is its simplicity. It's a fun environment to learn about new perspectives and meet new people. Also, the fact that we only meet once a month is nice because we can keep the members engaged by not creating a heavy commitment within our busy schedules," said Ruiz.
If you are interested in joining, the club meets once a month on 2-4-6 days, in Mrs. Antkowiak's room. (310.) For more information, you can also contact me under Our Team page!
