As the school year progresses, some upperclassmen have already committed to a college through scholarships and sports opportunities. I asked some of these Mavericks what they did to get to this point, and how their hard work has paid off.
First off is Presley Mitchell, a Junior student athlete. She plays lacrosse as a midfielder, and plays for Coast Elite Lacrosse 2024. She is committed to SDSU and chose this school due to her love for the school environment.
"I chose this school because I love the team culture there, I’ve always wanted to go to this school growing up and have family members all go there, and you can’t beat California weather and the beach," said Mitchell.
Mitchell's hard work payed off. She shares what helped her get recognized by such a large school.
"I went to camps my whole life and I was noticed at recruiting camps and tournaments. I would recommend sending your emails to coaches and going to camps for schools that you are interested in!" said Mitchell.
Presley started playing lacrosse because of a friend, and already has goals for when she starts her college career.
"Once I get to college, I want to work to be a starter. I started playing lacrosse because I had friends who played, so I started. I love my teammates and the bonds I’ve created the sport," said Mitchell.
Andrew Gonzales, a Junior is the pitcher for the LCC Baseball team, he is committed to LSU.
"I’m committed to LSU because I like the coaches and they are really good," said Gonzales.
Andrew was recognized by the college at a baseball event, where he made a good first impression.
"I went to an event that they saw me in and I did really good. To those thinking of playing in college, work hard and try to put yourself in the best possible position you can get," said Gonzales.
Andrew already has goals when looking into his future college career.
"I want to get drafted out of high school to the MLB," said Gonzales.
Andrew has been playing baseball since he was small, and quickly found a love for the sport.
Congratulations to everyone who is already committed to a college or university, hard work really does pay off!
