Thank you for an amazing year!
Community and global service are great ways to get involved and make a difference in the world, even if it is one small step at a time. LCC has a host of students, specifically seniors, taking action and serving around the world. Mavericks are making a difference, and leaving their mark.
Service projects can be beneficial for students in a variety of ways. From providing opportunities to learn and grow, getting to know new students and cultures, and volunteering with animals all make a difference.
Juliana Buck, a senior Maverick, volunteered at the local animal shelter Rancho Coastal Humane Society where she walked and cared for the sheltered animals.
“My experience at Rancho Coastal really opened my eyes to see that I can not only make a difference helping people, but also animals. The dogs would always get really excited when I would show up and it made me see how I was helping them,” said Buck.
Getting involved in service can be easier than one might expect. There are a variety of different people and places looking for support and help from young students looking to be future leaders. For example, Senior Kiersten Robinson, got involved in service at the local elementary school, El Camino Creek, through the San Dieguito school district in a project called Study Buddies.
“I got involved in this project because I wanted to help elementary school students who may be struggling with school work or home life and provide a reliable source for them. When I was a Freshman I received a packet from LCC helping me get involved in the project,” shared Robinson.
The learning opportunities that community service can provide for students will stick with them forever and benefit them significantly in the future. It can bring new perspectives and inspiration to continue to serve and lead.
Senior Maddie McMinn made her mark this summer when she traveled to Puerto Rico, inspired by, and following in the footsteps of her older sister. She shares how she was changed during her involvement in Puerto Rico through working with both the local community and her fellow students.
“[Over the summer] I took a humanitarian trip to Puerto Rico to rebuild homes for hurricane victims, and I got involved in this project because my sister had gone on one. This trip, overall, helped me grow and build myself as a person and it meant more than just the chance to put it on my record but to actually see the change I was making and the impact I was able to leave,” said McMinn.
Service will make a difference for both the service working individual and the service impacted community. It is a great way to get more in touch with oneself, other individuals, and communities in need. Even the smallest of actions can make the biggest difference, whether one sees it or not.
