LCC PALs is a group of peer counseling students on campus who are dedicated to improving the community’s mental health, and well being. They help through providing their peers in need with someone who listens, comforts, and aids; all within a friendly and safe environment.
PALs, which stands for Peer Assisted Listeners, have a specific mission statement that they promise to every student at LCC:
"Our mission is to help LCC and the students that attend it to lead happy, healthy lives. Our peer counselors are dedicated to helping LCC become a place filled with genuinely happy people even when things may not be going superbly in our lives. We want to help you deal with the struggles of high school, home life, and stressors of every type," as stated on the PALs website.
Those interested in meeting with a PAL can fill out an online or paper form for themself to meet a PAL located in their space within the office. One can also fill out a form for a friend or a peer in need. Meetings with PALs are confidential; therefore, everything that happens in PALs, stays in PALs; unless otherwise discussed with the student prior to reaching out for additional help. Along with giving students someone to talk to, LCC PALs also plans other activities like bringing therapy dogs to school, occasional movie meetups, and school luncheons.
Wesley Lai, a junior, is an active member of LCC Pals. He feels that it is a very important aspect to our school that brings everyone together, and helps the wellbeing of our campus.
"Pals team really cares about everyone. When we are brainstorming new things to focus on, we tend to dig deep for issues affecting the equality of the environment around us and fight them as much as we can. As someone who has struggled with feeling truly recognized and supported lccpeercounseling.weebly.com/faqs.html at schools before, I am confident in saying that our Pals team is working our hardest to ensure that," said Lai.
Along with the important job of helping others, being in LCC PALs also creates a sense of togetherness for the members themselves. They often meet together to share ideas, opportunities, and what is happening in their own lives.
"The best part of Pals is the sense of family that our team has. Everyone in our group really seems to get along well, and I always feel welcome there. I’m very glad that people I feel so comfortable around are the people we trust," said Lai.
Any student at LCC can be a PAL. Those who want to make a difference just need to fill out the PAL application.. The student will then be considered by the school counselors as a candidate to join the PALs community.
