Athletes at a volleyball competition

District 54 offers competition in Volleyball Individual Skills and Team Volleyball. All athletes compete at an Area Competition. The Individual Skills competition consists of 3 skill assessments including overhead pass (set), serving and passing (bumping). The scores from these 3 events are totaled and awards are given accordingly. Those athletes earning a Gold Medal qualify for State Level Competition. The Team consists of using either a modified or regular volleyball. They compete at the area tournament. If the team earns a gold medal they qualify to go to the State Competition.

Volleyball Facts

  • Volleyball was introduced to Special Olympics in 1983.
  • 259 athletes from 20 teams competed in volleyball at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland.
  • As of the 2005 Special Olympics Athlete Participation Report, 71,982 Special Olympics athletes compete in volleyball.
