Hillcrest Early Intervention Program
The Early Childhood Education Program is designed to service children with disabilities between the ages of 3 through 5 via our preschool program along with typical peers at the age of 4 years. This program fulfills our obligation under The Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 04), whereas, all students with disabilities, 3 -21 years of age, are to be educated with age appropriate peers, both with or without disabilities. Peers become role models for students with disabilities and enhance their own academic skills prior to entering kindergarten the following school year.
Children with disabilities must meet eligibility criteria for special education. If they meet the criteria an appropriate placement and services are decided upon. The American Falls Early Childhood Education Program is one of 3 settings at Hillcrest Elementary School. The other two preschool options include a language preschool for children with language only concerns or a speech preschool to specifically address speech concerns. We also partner with Head Start and have dually enrolled students.
The Early Childhood Education Program runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8-11 AM. Our focus is on teaching preschool and pre-kindergarten concepts through play, center-based activities, motor labs, and group times. We follow the 64 objectives of the E-Learning Guidelines for Idaho to address all domains of development and help each student be ready for Kindergarten.
Some favorite activities of students include acting out nursery rhymes and stories, learning the Alpha Friends songs, story time, watching chicken eggs develop through a microscope and seeing them hatch, observing the life cycle of caterpillars as they change into butterflies, recess with Kindergarten students, and participating in theme based motor labs where they walk on balance beams, crawl through tunnels, play with the parachute, hop on textures stones, etc.
