Introduction to Art: Grades:9-12 -1 Trimester

Description: This course covers art production, art history, aesthetics, and criticism. Students will be involved in two and three-dimensional hands-on assignments utilizing a variety of mediums. The classroom experience will include drawing skill development, exploring composition and design. Basic materials are furnished by the school. This course is required to take all other art classes at PHS.


Drawing I: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Introduction to Art

Students will use the fundamental elements and principles of art to create artwork. Students will work with different mediums including pencil, charcoal, pastel, and colored pencil. Realism drawing will be taught to develop the techniques of accurate drawing. *Class fee.


Drawing II: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Drawing I

Using skills learned in Drawing I, students will further explorate the art of drawing. Realism, color theory, abstraction, personal expression, and mixed media will be emphasized. *Class fee.


Painting I: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Introduction to Art

Students will use the fundamental elements and principles of art to create artwork . An introduction to watercolor and acrylic techniques will be taught and applied into artworks while students learn about art history. *Class fee.


Painting II: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Painting I

In Painting II, students will develop better drawing, painting, and composition skills using mediums that include watercolor, acrylics, ink wash, tempera, and oils. Various techniques will be taught and applied along with continued learning of art history. *Class fee.


Painting III: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Painting II

In this advanced class, students will develop strong painting skills and focus on a particular subject matter and medium. Independent projects, mixes media and aesthetics will be discussed and applied with continued learning of art history. *Class fee.


Ceramics I: Grades:9-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Introduction to Art

This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay and offers them further development in the elements of art and principles of design. Students will experience making decorative and functional pieces using a variety of hand-building techniques. Glaze technology and application will be explored. *Class fee.


Ceramics II: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Ceramics I

This intermediate class has increased requirements which explore more complex ceramic techniques. Sculpture methods will be introduced and explored. Emphasis will be placed on well thought out design, functional uses, and good craftsmanship. Students will further their study of glazing and firing technology. *Class fee.


Ceramic III: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Ceramics II

This advanced class has increased requirements where students will work on a series of more advanced and complex projects through a variety of hand - building, sculpting, glazing, and firing techniques. Art criticism and art history will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to work with the potter's wheel and learn advanced throwing skills. *Class fee.


Creative Process: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Intro to Art and one other art class

This course will explore 2 and 3 dimensional media. Emphasis is placed on the creative process and mastering use of the elements of art and principles of design while exploring various medias. Students will brainstorm ideas, generate preliminary sketches, explore composition and materials, and ultimately create final projects with individual, class and teacher evaluations and critiques. This class offers the opportunity to refine and develop skills using a variety of materials/media that may include clay, sculpture, paint, pastels, graphite, paper mache, wire, photography, glass, printmaking, textiles, fibers, markers and more. Each class offers a unique opportunity to explore and master new techniques and materials.


AP Studio Art: Grades:11-12 | 3 Trimester | Prerequisite: 2 Trimesters of Drawing, 2 Trimesters of Painting, and Teacher Recommendation

The Advanced Placement Art program is designed to help students prepare portfolios for college credit and/or art scholarships. Students will prepare 30 - 40 pieces of work. Portfolios will be sent to the College Board in May, and up to 9 college credits may be earned.


Computer Graphic Art I: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Intro to Art or Teacher Recommendation

Students learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to draw, paint, scan, edit and import images while creating original artwork. Membership in TSA is recommended.


Computer Graphic Art II: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Computer Graphic Art I

Students build on Photoshop skills while learning to use Illustrator and InDesign. Students will develop multimedia, digital and hard copy portfolios. Membership in TSA is recommended.


Computer Graphic Art III: Grades:10-12 | 1 Trimester | Prerequisite: Computer Graphic Art II

Students will continue to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills while creating flyers and billboards for school groups, local businesses, groups and organizations. Ongoing personal portfolio development and career exploration will be enriched by field trips to printing facilities, entering student art competitions, attending art shows and ongoing visiting artist and professionals. Membership in TSA is recommended.
