SCV Archery JOAD Program / Group Classes

JOAD stands for Junior Olympic Archery Development. This is a nationally recognized program of USA Archery that teaches archery to young individuals, provides great opportunities for awarding achievement, and helps archers to enjoy the sport recreationally or progress to the excitement of competitions. The City of Santa Clarita is proud to offer its first and only JOAD program, that offers archers the opportunity to learn safe and proper shooting form, as well as, to foster focus, develop self-confidence and team-building skills. SCV JOAD Program offers Beginner, Intermediate and Competitive Group Classes, along with Pin Achievement Program, that encourages our archers to set their goals to achieve their personal best in their archery journey.

Beginner Group Class: Session Aug 26 - Oct 2

COARSE INFORMATION:

Group classes are every Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm for 6 consecutive weeks at SCV Archery Range. Total Course Length: 24 hours. Equipment included for students. Total Cost: $350 per student.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Students of SCV JOAD Group Class must be in between the ages of 9 to 20. (In the future, we will be opening group classes for SCV Adult Archery Program. Stay tune!)
  • Basic Communication / Comprehension Skills: Student must know how to follow class instructions and safety commands.
  • Student must complete Free Intro to Archery on Safety before the second week of group class, or Student must have this prerequisites waived/approved by from SCV Coaches after a brief assessment meeting.
  • Become a registered USA Archery Member. Students in Beginner Group Class can go for their Recreational Membership ($15/year). To register, go to https://www.usarchery.org/memberships/become-a-member, click on ‘Join/Renew,’ sign up for a new account, and make sure you select ‘SCV Archery’ as your club association. As a USA Archery affiliated archery club, we require all our club members and JOAD Program students to have USA Membership. Benefits include individual and general liability insurance, event participation eligibility, such as JOAD Pin Shoots, and etc. See link provided. You may register for USA Archery Membership before/after you register for SCV Group Class or before July 1.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

Students in Beginner Group Class must fulfill the following requirements, in order to be eligible for Intermediate Group Class. Students will be evaluated based on score, form and attendance. (Note: It may take an archer, anywhere from one session to one year to fulfill all the Beginner Group Class graduation requirments.)

  • Scoring / JOAD Pin Achievement:

During the final week 6 of the session, students will have the opportunity to participate in a Pin Award Shoot to earn their Pins. Note: Students are not required to earn all their required Beginner pins in first 6-week session. It may take anywhere from 6 weeks to 1 year for students in Beginner Class to achieve all their required Beginner Class pins. We encourage our students to set their own goals for every session, and to keep practicing hard to achieve their next award level color pins. In order to graduate from Beginner Class, and be eligible for Intermediate Class, students must score enough to earn at least their black pin for indoor distance and green pin for outdoor distance.

For Indoor Distances (30 Arrow Round): Student must score a minimum of 150 points on 60cm target face at 18M distance, or achieve their green, purple, grey, white and black JOAD Indoor Pins.

For Outdoor Distances (36 Arrow Round): Student must score a minimum of 180 points on 122cm target face at 20M distance, or achieve their green and purple JOAD Outdoor Pin.

  • Form Assessment from Coaches:

Coaches will assess student’s ability to demonstrate a basic and consistent T-form, that includes, good Stance, Grip and Hook, Anchor, and Follow Through.

  • Attendance:

It is important to attend class to keep up with learning the form and developing the motor skills/strength, in order to perform well and shoot safely in archery. Students are required to attend a minimum of 10 out of the total 12 classes in the 6-week session. Unfortunately, there will be no opportunity to makeup missed classes. The maximum excused tardiness is 2 times, with no more than 10 minutes late. Please arrive early or on-time for every class.

Intermediate Group Class: Session Aug 26 - Oct 2

(By Invitation Only with Head Coach Approval)

COARSE INFORMATION:

Intermediate Group classes are every Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at SCV Archery Range. Total Course Length: 20 hours/month. Monthly Recurring Cost of $250 per student with 6 months commitment. Students can break out of Training Agreement within the first two months of training, otherwise, the recurring payment will continue and the students will continue training with SCV Coaches for the next 4 months.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Fulfill all the Prerequisites from Beginner Group Class
  • Fulfill all the Graduation Requirements from Beginner Group Class
  • Must have their own equipment. (Contact Coach Jen at jen@scvarchery.com for recommended and custom equipment lists.)
  • Archery Journal / Pocket Size Notebook
  • Meet with Head Coach Rene to discussion goals and training plan. Complete and sign the Training Agreement Form.
  • Become a registered SCV Club Member.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

Students in Intermediate Group Class must fulfill the following requirements in scoring, form and attendance, in order to be eligible for Competitive Group Class.

  • Scoring / Pin Achievement:

Students will have the opportunity to participate in Pin Award Shoot or in Local/State/National tournaments to earn their Pins.

For Indoor Distances (30 Arrow Round): Student must score a minimum of 270 points on 60cm target face at 18M distance, or score a minimum of 260 points on 40cm target face at 18M distance to graduate from Intermediate Class. This is equivalent to earning at least the blue, red and yellow JOAD Indoor Pins.

For Outdoor Distances (360 Arrow Round): Student must score a minimum of 315 points on 122cm target face at 30M distance, or must score a minimum of 315 points on 122cm target face at 50M distance, or score a minimum of 290 points on 122cm target face at 60M distance, in order to graduate from Intermediate to Competitive Class. This is equivalent to earning grey, white, black, blue, red and yellow JOAD Outdoor Pins. Students should shoot the distance required according to their age division.

  • Form Assessment from Coaches:

Coaches will assess student’s ability to demonstrate consistent NTS form and shooting process, that includes, good Stance, Grip and Hook, Set, Set-up, Load, Anchor, Transfer/Expand and Follow Through.

  • Attendance:

It is important to attend class to keep up with learning the form and developing the motor skills/strength, in order to perform well and shoot safely in archery. Students are required to attend a minimum of 8 out of the total 10 classes in a monthly session. Unfortunately, there will be no opportunity to makeup missed classes. Absences due to conflicting archery tournament dates may be excused, however, students must give 2 weeks notice to coaches and provide a copy of their tournament scorecard. The maximum excused tardiness is 2 times, with no more than 10 minutes late. Please arrive early or on-time for every class.

  • Tournament Participation:

Participate in a minimum of 2 local/state/national Indoor Tournament, and a minimum of 2 local/state/national Outdoor Tournament. Student may also earn their JOAD Pins from tournaments. Please submit your scorecard copy with Tournament Director’s/Judge’s signature to Head Coach after tournament.

  • Additional Practice & Archery Journals:

Students in our Intermediate Class are required to practice a minimum of 100-150 arrows per day for three additional days, outside of scheduled class time. Students will record their practice hours, arrow count. form agenda and reflections in their Archery Journals.
