Seymour and Audrey hit the Rio Rico High School stage this April!
The Rio Rico High School Theatre has many reasons to be proud. All its productions are done entirely by the its proud theatre students. These high schoolers engage in designing and building the full production from concept to the finished production. This spring is no exception to the philosophy as the RRHS Theatre Department is proud to present their spring production of Little Shop of Horrors by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. The production will be directed by Joseph Ellison with Assistant Direction by Marysela Alvarez, Choreography by Leslie Encinas and Musical Direction under Aimee Cadena and Quinn O'Donnell and instrumental performances from members of the Hawk Bands. Star performers include Ivan Solis as Seymour and Samantha Beemer as Audrey with Chantel Guzman as Audrey II.
When the socially awkward floral shop clerk, Seymour, finds a bizarre new plant after a solar eclipse, he and his colleagues quickly discover that this odd-looking seedling may be the key to restore revenue into their floundering Skid Row flower shop. As the shop grows so does the magnificent plant, Audrey II, into a carnivorous alien with the desire to take over the world. Faced with the trials of love, honesty, and clear understanding Seymour must decide to be foe or friend.
This show also marks a special occasion for Rio Rico High School as it will be the first full length musical in school history. “As our department grows in size and character I am truly excited to take our abilities to professional quality. I have high expectations for my students and I am excited to see what adventures await us as we continue to soar the Hawk Theatre Program.” Director Ellison says as he begins his work into Little Shop of Horrors “Being the first musical we have to set goals for ourselves and strive for that excellence that I know we’re capable of achieving.”
Little Shop of Horrors will be running March 24th at 2:00pm and March 26th at 6:30pm. All performances will take place at Rio Rico High School Cafetorium. Tickets will be $5.00 for students and $8.00 for general admissions, and will be provided both at the door 40 minutes before performance time or purchased at the Rio Rico High School Bookstore starting early February.
Meet Marysela Alvarez, set designer for Hay Fever. Marysela is a senior at Rio Rico High School and an a co-president for our Thespian Troupe. Marysela came on board as the show set designer in the August and took charge of the set crew. Her vision was to stay true to the realism of Hay Fever and really bring the Bliss home to life. Within her creation you truly see the messy chaos of the family coming life. She drew inspiration from the way the Bliss family treats each other and their guest, really seeing the comedy of manners coming to life in the production.
