We're excited to announce the introduction of the President's Volunteer Service Award to SU643! This prestigious award was established in 2003 by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Its purpose is to honor people who significantly improve their communities and to encourage others to do the same.
Our Service Unit recognize our exceptional Girl Scouts and adult volunteers who go above and beyond to serve the community and scouting. Don’t hesitate to contact the SU 643 leadership team at su643@scoutsnorcal.org if you have more questions about the President’s Volunteer Award.
Donating funds
Political lobbying (Non-partisan voter registration is an eligible activity)
Religious instruction
Conducting worship service
Proselytizing
Volunteer service performed as part of court-ordered community service
Serving only family members
Chaperoning at Girl Scout functions, such as meetings, overnights, cookie booths, etc.
Reconciling, managing, or assisting with managing a Girl Scout troop’s finances during product program(s) and/or year-round
Planning or researching for troop functions, such as special outings or adventures
Advising, guiding, or mentoring girls through their Take Action Projects or Bronze/Silver/Gold Awards
Any guidance or work you perform in a committee capacity in your troop, service unit, or in the council (example: volunteer-run camp committee member or organizer)
Whatever assistance you lend as needed! Because you are a registered Girl Scout volunteer, virtually any and all work you perform for your Girl Scout troop is an act of service.
All of the above, plus:
Virtually any/all work you perform in the name of your troop: all time you spend planning, coordinating, arranging logistics, emailing, researching, etc. for your Girl Scout troop to operate.
Because Girl Scout leaders are unpaid volunteers, realistically almost every action you do in the name of your Girl Scout troop – work that allows you to actively lead your troop or all the “invisible, behind-the-scenes” work that you do that allows your troop to exist and function – would qualify for the Presidential Service Award.
Performing direct and actionable community service, such as helping at soup kitchens or helping at community organizations’ functions as a Girl Scout youth volunteer
Organizing, researching, and planning a service event, even a “passive” event like a donation or goods drive
Hours spent toward earning the Community Service, Service to Girl Scouting award, Leader-in-Action, or Program Aide awards
Example:
Camporee committee member
planning/leading, or assisting with badge-in-a-day
planning/leading, or assisting with recruitment events
Registered Girl Scouts do not need to complete any badge or Higher Awards to be eligible for the President's Volunteer Service Award.
Girl Scouts who perform service that satisfies the requirements laid out in page 2 of this FAQ are eligible for the Presidential Service Award.
If registered Girl Scouts are providing service (as defined on page 2 of this document) as part of their TAP / BA/ SA/ GA, then yes, those hours may also be counted toward their President's Volunteer Service Award hours.
How does a Girl Scout or adult volunteer record their volunteer hours?
SU643 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers can make a copy of the log here, log their hours and follow the volunteer log directions below.
Volunteer Log Instructions:
Please copy the document before recording hours
The non-profit organization authority or troop leader must certify the volunteer work
When a Girl Scout fulfills the award requirements, the troop leader must email the time log to the SU643 leadership team at su643@scoutsnorcal.org
Submit your hours to the SU email above by November 1 of the following membership year.
Example: keep track of your hours for the membership year (October 1, 2023 - September 30, 2024), and by November 1, email the SU team your completed log for the 23-24 membership year.
For the 2022-2023 membership year, SU643 will be accepting hours until December 31, 2023.
We hope to be able to recognize our eligible volunteers and youth members at each spring’s annual SU643 recognition and awards night, depending on how long the verification process takes with the federal government and other external organizations.
Important: Volunteers/youth must submit their own hours, themselves, to the SU team for consideration. Unlike the other awards and recognition we host in the spring event, the PSA does not have a nomination process. Candidates must self-endorse.
