Teachers selected to be a part of this fellowship will meet 4 times over the course of the 2022-23 school year. Sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Harold Asturias, Gloria Hurtado, and Emily Akinshin. The fellowship will provide a provocative learning experience that builds the participants' instructional and leadership skills with opportunities to apply new learning in their context. Activating the mathematical agency of students who are far from justice, especially those whose racial identity is not represented in the dominant culture will be emphasized. This is complex work. Together we will examine our own practice and understand our role as informal and formal leaders in math education.
Necessary Space
Together we will create “necessary” space
Because there is no such thing as a “safe space.”
We exist in the real world
We all carry scars and we have all caused wounds.
In this space We seek to turn down the volume of the outside world,
We amplify voices that fight to be heard elsewhere,
We call each other to more truth and love
We have the right to start somewhere and continue to grow.
We have the responsibility to examine what we think we know.
We will not be perfect.
This space will not be perfect.
It will not always be what we wish it to be
But it will be our necessary space together,
And we will work on it side by side
Community Agreements
Speak your truth and listen actively to others's truths
Stay engaged
Accept and unpack disagreements with curiosity
Keep students and equity at the center of our work
Expect and accept a lack of closure
Make space for joy
We all have the right to change our minds without negative consequences
