YouTube LIVE

We are currently exploring new ways to be Science in a Van.

Due to COVID-19 we can't perform live science shows in person ... but we can connect with you! So wherever you find yourself at the moment - join us each day for some laughs, some fun science and community.

Get ready to engage EVERYDAY at 12.45pm NZ time

We are having some trouble using YouTube live streaming ARGH - please swap over to our facebook page live stream if you're having issues. Thanks!!!

Scroll down for recordings of previous live streams AND look ahead to prepare for future sessions.

Big thanks to the Science Learning Hub for allowing us to link to their fabulous resources. If you've got primary school and high school kids at home the Science Learning Hub caters for them all!

Testing, Testing 1, 2, 3

Day 1 - 23 March 2020

Day 2 - 24 March 2020

Day 2 - We talked about plants and what they need to grow. Check out this Science Learning Hub resource to get you thinking.

Alan got the vacuum jar out and ... well, what the video to see what happened!

Day 3 - 25 March 2020

Day 3 - We explored the science behind forces with some fun hands-on experiments.

Print this template or follow Alan's instructional video to make your own.

Science Learning Hub helps us think about forces and motion.

Day 4 - 26 March 2020

Today was all about floating and sinking! Alan shows us a magic trick ... or can it be explained with science?

There's also an experiment you can recreate at home.

Science Learning Hub has videos and all kinds of cool stuff here.

Day 5 - 27 March 2020

What happens when you put a marshmallow in a vacuum jar? On Day 5 - we found out!!!

Day 6 - 28 March 2020

Today we explored 'balance'. It was fun!

Day 7- 29 March 2020

Today you'll need a ruler, something to draw with and some paper. It's gonna be chilled :)

Day 8 - 30 March 2020

We do the classic vinegar and baking soda experiment - WOOHOO and introduce 'The Cupboard of the Universe!' (aka the Periodic Table).

Check out learning links here.

Day 9 - 31 March 2020

You'll need a bowl/tray (something to hold water), water, black pepper and washing up liquid.

Also, (if you have spare) an egg, a glass and some vinegar.

Day 10 - 1 April 2020

Today we see how the vinegar has changed our egg. You can read more about this process here.

In addition we look at how some materials are good for completing electrical circuits and some are not. Check the Science Learning Hub for more info about conductors and insulators.

Day 11 - 2 April 2020

Today we talked about the three common states of matter - solid, liquid and gas. Check out this resource from Science Learning Hub that will expand your knowledge! The experiment today helped us to think about how temperature can change materials. (Can experiment)

We did some more live planting of sprouts ... wonder how that's going to go???

Day 12 - 3 April 2020

Today we got the vacuum jar out and discovered what happens when you put water under pressure!

Day 13 - 4 April 2020

Today we explored the 'can experiment' from Day 11 in a new way. We do a new experiment and we'll move water with a change of temperature ... WHAT? Yup... watch and see.

In addition, because it's Saturday, we show you a fun physics trick you can try OUTSIDE :)

Day 14 - 5 April 2020

Do water and cooking oil mix? Find out in this Science in a Van LIVE!

Day 15 - 6 April 2020

Today is start of Noise Week! We'll be learning all about the science behind sound.

Of course, we start the week off with an explosion that we all can hear!

Day 16 - 7 April 2020

We working on it! More details soon :)
