Natural killer cells, ask known as NK cells, are a type of cytotoxic lymphocyte. NK cells provide a rapid response to virus-infected cells and tumor forming cells by recognizing and killing stressed cells. They do this by releasing a protein called perforin at the targeted cell. The perforin forms pores in the cell membrane of the target cells and causes the cell to begin controlled cell death, also called apoptosis.
