Diwali, also called Deepavali or Deepawali, is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolizes the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
Origin & Significance ॐ
Diwali originated in the Indian subcontinent over 2,500 years ago. The festival is mentioned in early Sanskrit texts like the Padma Purana and Skanda Purana, and the word "Diwali" itself comes from the Sanskrit word dipavali, which means "row of lights." Diwali is celebrated for several reasons. It commemorates the return of Lord Rama after his 14-year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana in Northern India and people had lit lamps to guide his path home. In southern India, Diwali celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, who had imprisoned many women. And in Western India, the festival is often linked to the defeat of King Bali by Lord Vishnu. Lastly in many regions, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped, she is known as the goddess of wealth and prosperity and many people clean and decorate their homes with diyas and fairy lights to welcome her blessings.
