A night of music and mayhem, held on September 11, 2024, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, gave us entertainment and quite a few questionable moments. The VMAs (Video Music Awards), a fan voted event, is held every year to honor the best in each nominated category.
A renowned rapper opens the VMAs by performing “Houdini” from his latest album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).” Eminem, the 52 year old artist, who has 8 nominations this year, has once again hit the stage with a performance that is self-referential with bleached hair from the 2000s. He later left the stage, only to reappear for a heartfelt presentation of “Somebody Save Me.”
Moving on to the performers, we have: Sabrina Carpenter, Lisa of BLACKPINK, Katy Perry, Eminem, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Karol G, and many more with outstanding visuals and quite unique scenarios. Although, Sabrina Carpenter’s performance was “weird” to a well known artist named Britney Spears. “Why is she kissing an alien onstage? I adore her. I love her to death. I didn't understand that part. Why didn't she kiss a girl?" She says to her fans in her Instagram account. Sabrina Carpenter had mentioned Britney Spears at the red carpet and made a subtle reference to “Oops…I Did It Again” during the transition of her performance in “Please Please Please”. “She said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was cool…She made me cool.” added Britney Spears.
While LISA of BLACKPINK performs her newest hit “New Woman” and “Rockstar” with an eye-catching red outfit, Chappell Roan gave us a “Lady Knight In A Shining Armor” vibes through her performance in the VMAs. The 26 year old artist faces criticism from numerous fans “The carpet is HORRIFYING” she says, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I yelled back. It's easier for me to stand up for myself. I'm not taking this for the rest of my career. I've been famous for like, one month. This is not how it's gonna go girl!” She says single-mindedly. After this incident, many artists have agreed with Chappell Roan because they feel the same.
Apart from Chappell Roan, Tyla also faces backlash as she makes Lil Nas X and Halle Bailey hold her award on Wednesday night. “You guys know me and are holding awards. Yo, I cannot— I’m not strong enough.” Tyla, a South African, Grammy winning artist known for her hit song “Water” from 2023, responds to the online criticism by tweeting, “Y'all make everything weird.” The Little Mermaid actress later on commented on the tweet saying, “exactly ❤️❤️ love you babes congrats 🎉 ” Lil Nas X or Halle Bailey, however, didn't seem to mind at all as Tyla adds “please, please” before handing her moonman award for a temporary moment as she gives her acceptance speech.
The winner of seven moonmen in one night, including song of the summer: Fortnight; feat. Post Malone, Taylor Swift shares a cute moment with her boyfriend Travis Kelce during her speech for “Video of the Year.” “Something that I’ll always remember is when I would finish a take.. I would always just hear someone cheering ‘woo’ from across the studio where we were shooting it, and that one person was my boyfriend, Travis.” Travis Kelce, an American Football player, has stepped aside from the VMAs due to his commitments for football in Kansas city. However, fans had hoped to see Taylor and Travis make their official red carpet debut at the VMAs.
Another one of our singers who is famous for her 4 octave vocal range, who didn't attend the VMAs despite being nominated “Best Direction” for “We can’t be friends (wait for your love)”, appreciates her fans saying “I just wanted to say thank you and I love you so much to my angel fans who have been riding so hard for ‘We can’t be friends’”. Araiana Grande, the actress in the upcoming broadway musical, Wicked, shares her love to her fans through her Instagram Story as she works with the production of Wicked, a broadway musical which is to be released in November 2024.
To finish off, there was a new rising star among the red carpet. Isabel Larosa, who made her first debut on the red carpet. In an interview with J-14 Magazine she said, “I am so nervous. This is my first time being on a red carpet, so I don't know any of this, but I'm very excited.” The 20 year old star, started to go viral when she released her 2022 single “I'm yours”. Her brother Thomas Larosa, working side by side with her, shows a special bond between them. “We literally spend like, every single second together. So it's like literally writing [songs] with your best friend”. This musically talented duo does remind us of another acclaimed duo: Billie Eilish and Finneas. When mentioned, Thomas adds, “It’s an honor to be compared to them.”
